So I keep hearing over and over that the buck genes in this area are screwed up because there are so many big 2 points that stay 2 points forever. So it got me thinking... Why not take this unit and do special permits for youth during rifle season for 2 point or even any buck. Thay way they can get some of these bad genes out. I think it'd be good for youth. And the way I see it the kids are our future. I wouldn't reccomend making it all any buck cause then that would just kill off all the bucks which is no good. Plus id rather see kids having a chance at these bucks anyways. Just my  what do you guys think? Would this be a good idea?

Those Genes are popular throughout the Prescott GMU. I have seen them every year since I started hunting. I have several of them dead with a bullet hole in them over the years too. I wish they would do that for a couple years. Hate to see a nice mature buck go to waste just becuase some moron saw a nice frame and pulled the trigger. Thin 'em out. let somebody eat them and hopefully some clean genes will move in to the area
          Several years ago my Dad killed a buck that had a very nice two point frame and a tiny little crab claw 3rd point on it. It landed 3 point side down. when we walked up to it my Dad said. WTF where did that third point go. Then he pulled the other antler out of the tilled dirt and PHEW!!!! haha we both put a 3rd point on that deer before he pulled the trigger and then we were thinking we were imagining things for just a split second

Not just this area, just a higher % of bucks taken so you see the results of selection pressure faster.  Genetics are hard rules to overcome.  Select against a trait, that is kill 3 point plus bucks before they have a chance to breed, and even with low hereditability over time big spikes and two points have the advantage.

I hunt there every year for the past 8 years for archery... I do see alot of two points but I see more three points that's are very legal.. it gets hunted so hard every year you think there would be no deer left.. if they made it a special permit that would make a big increase in seeing more legal bucks.. people just dont let them grow. They see the 1" eyeguard and they're shooting...

Not everyone is a trophy hunter. i shoot the first legal buck i see in this state unless i happen to get a permit. I like the taste of venison.

I remember doing that. If you didnt take the shot at the 1st legal buck the hunting Gods would curse you with 2x2 the rest of the season. Now I archery hunt. I ate this years tag holding out for a buck...Of course I spent most of my deer season helping my friend scout for his branched antler bull. The rest of the season I was focusing on killing my 1st elk....no dice but I learned a lot and hope to make my 3rd archery season the lucky one

This year hunting I passed up 17 legal bucks. 3 point or better all on public land with a rifle. I ended up getting a small 3x4 with eyeguards on the last day of my late hunt. I stuck it out looking for a trophy and in the end took him for meat. Plenty of bucks out there guys. Nice ones. But Like my dad always told me, how are you gonna shoot a big buck if you keep shooting the first legal buck that comes by. So I take my chances, enjoy my hunt more and look for something bigger.

It's not just that area! that topic has been around for awhile! I too wish the WDFW would make a youth disabled hunt for these genes

I think its a.good idea. Make it general any buck and it'd be hard enough.to shoot a tiny 2 point. Just like before they made it 3 point or better.

Give the youth any buck hunts there and take away the youth moose hunts

Yeah they've had those permits for a couple years now. Roosevelt, Harrington, Steptoe, and Almota all had 25 muzzleloader permits for 2x2 bucks only. (apparently a 1x2 buck would NOT be legal with that permit, it says only 2x2 bucks)

I don't think so, I would ha ve to lean toward young bucks for that catagorie
