Palouse buck hunt

Hey guys, I'm new here, my name is Chad I hunt and fish a lot and use another forum a lot but it is mostly just for fishing

I realize asking for information on my first post is frowned upon... but if I had a recent successful hunting trip I would, but I don't. If I could figure out how to post a picture I would post one of a bear I killed a couple weeks ago, but I'm still trying to figure that out.

Anyways, my dad drew a Palouse buck tag this year, I put him in for this after seeing its had some decent success rates on some good bucks, I knew it was going to be tough to get access... but there really aren't a lot of options for the buck tag drawing so I thought I'd give it a shot. SO my question is, does anyone have a contact for some private land to hunt there? I've contacted the local biologist, he was a pretty big help but sounds like I need to physically drive over there and start asking for permission, which I plan to do just haven't found the time yet (I've got both deer and elk multi season tags so its been a busy september).

I would contact the wdfw region 1 office and ask for a list of farmers who would like some deer thinned out on there land. Generally the enforcement officers have a contact list put together.

I live in Pullman and used to work harvest out between Palouse and Colfax. Go out to Draper Rd, its about midway between the two towns on HWY 272. Go north and knock on some doors along that road. There are some good bucks out there.

You really do need to physically go there and knock on doors.  Make sure to mention that you asking about the late hunt.  Seems that some farmers are more willing to allow you to hunt after the general season.

Yup they get hammered for general season so either asking way before or after is the way to do it. If you can find land phone calls works ok to I got permission at 9 out of 10 that I called on this year...but I'n also local

Yeah, I got a buddy who drew the 2nd deer Doe tag for Colfax. I got him permission to hunt a few places on the Palouse. Its definately easier for someone local to get permission.

You might have to knock on a few doors but people will most likely let you hunt don't be shy the deer there are thick and it can be dangerous on the roads most people welcome hunters.

Wrecker might see you buddy out then, My dad and I both have the 1080 antlerless tag as well  have a few places with permission already so we'll see.

Does anyone have any pictures of bucks harvested from the Palouse? I think we'll be able to determine a shooter buck once we get there and look at some deer the first couple of days, but I'm trying to get my dad a little riled up about the hunt.

Haha I know what you mean about getting him riled up. I'm taking my dad out for the first time in about 17yrs and he's so hohum about it. But I know once he see's the first deer while we're out it'll get his blood pumpin.

Buckman202, if you see a silver and white F250 driving around Monday and Tuesday after the opener that's probably us. We hunt my uncle's land on Patit Rd out of Dayton for the opener. Have not hunted on the Palouse since all the other hunters drove us out of Steptoe Grade a couple of years ago. Nice deer down there but what a zoo!

Most of the hunting I have done on the Palouse was in closer to the river, but I have hunted a little bit out by Albion. Unfortunately my favorite spot out there is on the wrong side of the road for the doe tag.

We'll be out and about in a blue expedition, Trying to figure out what my dad wants to do first...Quality deer or fill doe tags hopefully we'll have the doe tags filled by that monday but we'll see. Yea lot of people down in the steptoe grade area..were you hunting squally john or private land? This will be my first modern season(usually muzzle loader) so we'll see who all is out. I have noticed over the last 2-3 years a decline in the amount of hunter orange I see on my way to work during modern so hopefully that trends continues.

I hunted mostly private stuff on Steptoe Grade, problem was the owner lets anyone hunt it. Every year it would scout good, but come opening morning you would be battle hunting with a bunch of other people and your scouting was worthless. Most of the people I ran into out there were reasonable enough, just too many of them. The roadhunters there are out of control as well. It's like rush hour in Spokane on opening weekend down there.

I have had very good luck out by Albion, even the feel free to hunt out there is pretty good and uncrowded.
