Quick size guesstimate please
« on: September 19, 2011, 10:45:44 AM »
I'm working with a designer to finalize the floor plan and dimensions on a cabin and I want to make sure to leave a comfortable amount of space for a shoulder mount of this elk.  I'm wondering what the approximate height would be from the bottom of the mount to the tip of the antlers.  For reference the rack is 40" wide.  Any help appreciated.

Band:
This is a question better suited for your taxidermist to answer.
Depending on the form style that you choose and who sculpted the form this measurement can vary.
With a 40" spread will the form may need to be altered and if so that will change the overall height.
I can tell you from experience that typically a 9-10 foot ceiling height will be adequate for any style form without cutting into living space.
Either way once you have selected a taxidermist I would solicit their advice BEFORE you choose a form.
good luck

Thanks Jeff.  Bucklucky is going to do the mount and he already has the cape.  I haven't yet had an opportunity to meet with him with my questions and to select a form since he is pursuing elk at the moment but I've got to figure out the cabin dimensions pretty quickly based on a best guess.  I'm (pleasantly) surprised to hear that a 9-10' ceiling will be adequate.  I would have thought it would be 12-15' high. :dunno:

Just depends on how high up on the wall you want the Bull, and what pose you want.  You can get away with a lot or you can maximize the pose with high ceilings.  If you were planning on 10' celings, I would consider 12".  If you have a space for a vaulted ceiling, even better yet.  Most importantly are you leaving room for a Moose, Big Horn Sheep, Mountain Goat, Caribou, multiple deer, antelope, etc.  Think long term.  Congrats on a beautiful bull

A 9' or 10' ceiling will work depending on the pose you use.  I would go more with the 12' - 15'

Thanks for your input folks.  I think we'll go with 12' minimum, maybe 14'.

And yes, there will be space for other antlered creatures.  If nothing else I have several deer antlers on plaques that the Mrs. would love to see move from the house to the cabin.  But if I'm reserving my right to use both places for display purposes. ;)

Has she figured out that these items have a tendency to multiply over periods of time?  :chuckle: :chuckle:
