Take me with you?
« on: September 19, 2011, 04:34:26 AM »
I posted in the hunting partners section as well, so I apologize if I am wrong in posting this here. I'm new to the sport, and looking for someone to introduce me. I'm 25 and have passed hunter safety already. While I wait for modern deer season, is there anyone that would be willing to take me grouse hunting with them? I have a Ruger .22LR handgun, but no knowledge of where or how to find grouse! Is anyone willing to show me the ropes? Thank you so much!

~Jenny

Have you gotten any takers yet Jennyfell55?  I'm not sure where you're willing to go for upland game but here on the West Side I've found it pretty tough to hunt.  Do you have a shotgun?  You can get into Grouse if you can find them.  Best bet is to head over to the east side and get after Chukar and Quail.  I hunted West Side about 4 times last year and didn't fair so well.  Drop me a line or send a PM if you're interested in going over to the East Side :dunno:

Jenny welcome to the hunting community. It is great to see young men and women like you (even though I am not that much older than you) getting out in the outdoors. As for taking you with me I think my wife might not like that (I know she wouldn't  ;) ). My suggestion for you would be to head up towards Mt. Rainer via Hwy 7 and Hwy 706 (bear left at Elbe). Once you get past Kernahan Rd/Skate Creek road look for a Forest Road (FR) 70(?) on your left. Follow that up until you get in the noble firs and once there try and find some trails to walk or old roads. Early in the morning would be best as the blue grouse should be out loafing around early in the day. There are other roads off Skate Creek road, but I have not spent much time over there. If you want to drive further you can head up I-90 and once you get to the top of the pass I believe there are some forest service roads that would get you up into blue grouse country behind the ski resorts. With a handgun I would make sure to take a walking stick for using as rest. Good luck and hope to see you out in the field.
