I'm sure this has probably been asked on here but I couldn't find a thread on it.  Is there a way to submit a special hunt application e.g. quality elk/modern rifle but then change your tag to archery if you are not drawn?

I would like to get drawn for a quality elk hunt using my rifle but if I'm not drawn I want to bowhunt like I normally do.  Is this possible?

Thanks for any advice...

Once you submit an application you can't change. Otherwise everybody and their dog would be doing it.

You could apply for the multiseason permit, draw it and pay for it, then do what you want to do and you could do it on both sides of the state if you don't mind paying for it.

Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

No, it's not possible. I think there's a chance that could change though. It was one of the topics on the survey for the next three year season setting process. I hope they keep it like it is though.

The only way is with the multi season tag.   Not too easy to get, and costs about 180 bones.

I think it kind of stinks but that's mainly because I would like to use my rifle on what I consider to be a "hunt of the lifetime".  But I absolutely don't want to hunt general rifle just to do it...

Thanks for the info guys...

Like others said multi-season is your only option.

I sure as hell hope they never allow that.  You would have thousands of people doing that.  The areas open to archery cow hunting would be overwhelmed.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

:yeah:
And that is the main reason they do not do it.

Washington State has too many in-state hunters and not enough game to do that.  Same thing with Oregon.  Idaho, Montana and Wyoming will let you hunt all three seasons on a General Tag, but they have less people and more animals.
Hell, we don't even have enough elk to let people hunt on both sides of the state in the same year... :dunno:

Hope not!!! Already enough wannabe bow hunters out there. I'd rather see multi go away.

So, I still don't get it... and am obviously missing something  We're talking about a once in 10 years opportunity if I am lucky, so what if I want to use a rifle instead of a bow for it?  Do you really think most of the guys hunting modern rifle now are doing it because of special hunt opportunities?  I would think not.  And vice-versa, are most bowhunters doing it because of the special hunts?  My guess is also no.  However, I do believe there are a lot of guys bowhunting only because of the timing of the general archery season.

The main problem I see with it is that many people with general season archery tags would also do the same as you want to do, and apply for the rifle permits instead of the archery permits, if they were allowed to do so. This would decrease odds of drawing those "Quality" bull elk permits. Of course it could also work the other way around- I might buy a general season rifle elk tag but apply for archery permits if it was allowed. So I don't know. Maybe it's not as big of a deal as we think it is.
