Well I think there is an over abundance of tribal hunters.....

Whats the ellipse for Rem?  Why don't you just finish what you want to say?
Sorry Coastal, I should have been more clear.....I think there are an over abundance of  Eastern Washington Tribal Hunters! I really don't have a clue what goes on over there.  Don't look too much into the ........ as I seem to do it all the time. Guess I have a twitchy ...... finger!

You don't owe me an apology.  If you wanna question the management, you have every right.  I thought you might be insinuating that there is an over abundance of tribal hunters and therefor some population control might be in order.  With the amount of tribal threads in the last few weeks, perhaps it's me that has a twitchy finger.

As for the topic of sheep, I'm curious to hear what the management justification is for the tag increase.  Too many sheep, too little habitat?

on that note Coastal I am curious why the coastal natives are issued tags for elk when the Roosevelt elk are not native to that region and the ancestral indigenous hunters never hunted them.

????, There is no way I can answer that question without sounding like a jerk.  If you really want an education, post it in the elk section and see what kind of responses you get.  What is your source?

I'll answer it. Roosevelt elk ARE native. Where did you think they came from?

I believe eastside elk are not native, and they were introduced in the early 1900's.

Roosevelt elk on the OP are genetically distinct from other elk.  They also have morphological and behavioral differences.  And some like me would argue physiological differences.  They were almost wiped out by market hunting and early white settlers.

Elk in eastern Washington have always been the Rocky's.  Early white settlers and market hunters almost wiped them out.  While many say they were reintroduced I think it best to say they were augmented by elk from Yellowstone and a few other areas.  If you look into the history of game laws in this state they started with the protection of elk from the ??????

So what's the scoop on the sheep? Are they native & hunted by tribes long ago or were they planted?

Native species that was extirpated and reintroduced.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

I'll say it.  It is compete s**t that get any tags period are givin to tribal hunters. Argue what ever argument you want, i truely dont care.  Flip the script for just once and see what happens.  Give my people 42 tags (while you wait a whole lifetime to draw one) and see how you feel.  Not to mention the fact that your tags are for "population control" on an animal that is widely considered as one of the greatest trophies and sought after animals in North America.  I bet what ends up happening is the tribe will end up selling the tags as guided hunts and making a huge chunk of change to boot.  I am beyond pissed.

Sorry but the State doesn't issue the Tribe anything its our own Game Dept. And our Tribal Council.  Its against our own Laws to sell the tags and all hunting privileges would be taken away if caught.  We don't have big game open to anybody other than enrolled tribal members.

Yes this is true.  I heard it with my own ears at the meeting a couple weeks ago with the Yakamas and Muckleshoots.  They are getting 25 ram tags and 17 ewe tags.  The representitve from the Yakamas said "the reason for the extra tags is becuase there is a state wide over abundance of sheep"
so why not raffle the tags off to us regular people, the natives always get to deplete the wildlife, we pay and pay and get screwed in the butt when the indians get to do as they wish.

this could have brought revenue to WDFW, way to screw up morons!

atleast the tribals wont be able to DRIVE in and decimate the population as they do in colockum, they will have to get off their fat axxes and HIKE for their kills.
TANNERITE needed for target practice on opening day of each hunting season.

Hey plateau, you are doing nothing but making making my case even more valid. If you guys can hand out tags as "your fish and game dept" wishes, what the hell power does any Washington state citizen have.  But i guess that doesnt effect you and is not your problem, your hunting is safe and always will be.  Never in a million years could I imagine a day where there would truely be a need for population control on an animal such as a Big Horn Sheep.

Did the tribes have any part of the reintroduction like antelope or did we pay for all the transplants? I know there was tribal sheep hunting in the blues when it was closed to us. I can see population control meaning take all the big rams.
