Lewis River rifle rut hunt
« on: September 23, 2011, 03:29:16 PM »
Well it is over way to fast. Turkeyman myself and my cousin packed into the Mt. Adams wilderness last friday morning we set up camp and started scouting.  We covered lots of ground friday saterday and sunday scouting and didnt see any elk that I was looking for.  We did find several wallows and natural mineral licks.  Monday morning was the opening day for my tag we left camp early and went up high we spent all day hiking calling and looking and didnt see a single elk.  Tuesday morning we decided to head into those wallows and mineral licks that we had found earlyer in the week.  Turkeyman was calling for me and at around 7:00 in the morning we finally had our first answer to his calls.  The bull was getting farther and farther away as we called to him.  So my cousin decided we needed to get closer and pressure him.  We chased after him and called, he answered, we chased after again and called and he answered. The third time we chased after him he finally realized he was going to have to fight to keep his cows and started twards us.  We seen him through the timber but there wasnt a shot.  After a few cow calls and one imitated chuckle he steped out at 53 yards.  He looked like a moose standing there.  He was wide and I knew he was at least a good 5 point so I shot.  At the shot he jumped and took of running.  After a few high fives and hugs we decided to go look for blood we got to where he was and ther wasnt any blood or hair.  Thats when I started to worrie.  The bull was taking 10 feet a step and not a drop of blood.  After following tracks for about 70 yards we found two drops of blood.  I looked up and there was my bull 10 feet away.  It was the best hunt i have ever been on.  I would like to thank mystep dad aka turkeyman and my cousinLarry Sides who I couldnt have done it without. My bullet went in high through the front shoulder angled down took out both lungs and didnt exit. I cant beleve that my 300 Win mag didnt go all the way through him.

You may be computer challenged but after reading sounds like you got the elk hunting down pat.

Great bull man!  Sounds like a good hunt too.
