yote gun
« on: September 25, 2011, 09:54:40 PM »
my son is wanting to get into predator hunting. Ive shot yotes out to 300 yards with my 22 mag but I'm not sure if i should have him shooting such a small caliber. do you all think its a good idea or should i have him using a 7.62x 39. just alittle extra info the 22 mag hes using ballistic tiped hollow points the 7.62 normal military hollow points. I'm just asking even with yotes i dont like having to chase them.

Hmmm! 300 yards with a 22 Mag? I'll take your word for it but I wont believe it till I see it. How old is your Son? Get him a 22-250 and you won't have to chase after them again.  :twocents:

I'd use the 7.62, if it was between the two calibers.

he's 12. I'm going to be buying an AR hopefully the first part of next year. but for right now the chooses are 22 mag 7.62x39 or 30 06. i just hate having to pay for the 06 rounds just to hunt yotes. as for the 300 yard shot i wouldn't want you to believe it with out seeing it.

My nephew is 11 and can shoot a 22-250. Just use plain old 55gr soft point bullets at $20 per box. No need to get fancy.

22-250 is the hands down best yote caliber in my mind. Also the 223 is a very good choice and cheap to shoot.

I tried a sks with sp and man was I let down :dunno: I rolled the dang yote 4 times and it still ran out of sight which was a long way cause I was at the top of a hill over looking a valley and Im willing to bet I saw it run for well over a mile after it hit the flat at the bottom :bash: I would say use the 06 with some cheap loads if the boy can handle it

Any of the centerfire 22's are Hell on coyotes. You may kick the 243 around.....with light bullets it shoots as fast/flat as the 22-250 and heavier bullets make it a serious contender for big game.

30-06 will be fine with some low priced 150 grain bullets. Try Federals, Winchester Power Points, or Remington Core Lokts. Whatever you can get cheapest at Wal Mart.

my boy is 13, and shoots a .243 year round. Reloads for deer , then switches to .55gr for yotes. He is a nail driver with that rifle.
He also shoots my .22-250 no problem.

I have a .243 that is flat amazing with the 55gr noslers, I'm working on a deer load again now. I was carring the 95gr noslers but after shooting a coyote and seeing how nasty they are Ive got some 80 hornady gmx to try.

Ive been giving this alot of thought the last few days. so i decided to take him to the range today. the first few shots from the 06 he done fine the 4Th shot he got kissed. i didn't want him scared of the 06 not just before deer and elk season but it may be to late for that.  i got the  22mag resighted in at 1" high at 100 yards. since it was just me and him there i broke out the sks and let him put a few mags through it he done OK with it so now its off to buy some good hunting rounds for it. any suggestion? Ive hunted w/t with it but i just used the wolf ammo and it done OK. with the yotes i kinda think the cheaper ammo will do the trick but hell what do i know i hunt them with a 22. i don't want this to be a bad experience for him and a bad shot or bad round can make for a pretty bad day. i know theres better weapons for hunting yotes i just don't own one YET
