Lost Arrows
« on: September 26, 2011, 10:07:04 PM »
Hey,

I was just wondering how many bow hunters out there have lost arrows while hunting.  I just got back from a turkey trip and managed to lose about $40 in arrows and broadheads.   :bash: :bash:  I

I just hope that I am not alone out there.

I usually "donate" at least one a year while hunting.  If there's grouse involved, often more than one.

Just part of doin' business....  :)

I lost two carbon express arrows with talon broadheads while hunting for turkey.  One went into tall  grass...I was sure I would never see that one again, and one I shot down a hill, and who knowes where it slid under the short grass... :dunno:

I've lost one... question is how long before the broadhead rusts out and is no longer a hazard.... wouldn't want to step on one!!

Lucked out on my Rosie.... lodged in a tree on the other side... no hunting for it.

Dose anybody think that it would be better to just get those 3 pack broad heads at Walmart for $10, if I am not going for big game, or do you think that it really effects the flight pattern of the arrow.  All I know is that it would save some serious  :twocents:... :chuckle: :chuckle:

Arrows get lost. Fact of life.
I'd just like to remind everybody that it's about the hunting, not just the killing. In other words, it's about the total experience, the sport itself and the challenge involved. Bowhunting, done right, is a justifiable and honorable pursuit. Done for the wrong reasons, simply chalking up kills and seeking personal glory, it's taking away rather than giving back to a principled way of life that has to be experienced to be understood. So you'd save $6 per arrow, which is considerable. You have to test them yourself to see how they fly. My experience has shown me that durability is more affected than flight when purchasing broadheads based on price. If you're shooting them only at turkeys and they fly true, save the money. It's when they're striking bone and cutting ribs that you don't want them falling apart and leaving sharp edges waiting for you inside a deer or elk's body.

Think about it, A dozen TOP SHELF ARROWS will cost you between 90 and 150 dollars, you'll get  on a really  conservative estimate 1000 shots out of that dozen. Hell that's cheaper than match grade .22, damned sure cheaper than any centerfire ammo you'll find even if you reload.

Seems like I lose a few every year shooting at grouse. This year I have made a oath to not waste anymore arrows trying to harvest an animal that barely makes part of a meal and I have passed up several grouse this year I feel pretty good about my decision considering how much money I have into each arrow. I do have several that are just laying on trails or in brush holes somewhere because they just fell out of my quiver while I was hunting either because of a crappy quiver or brush and sticks pulled it out and I never noticed. There was one time years ago when I bumped a herd with a nice bull in it and I tried to haul ass and run around the herd to catch up with them and when I reached for and arrow to make a possible shot there was 3 missing! I bought a better quiver after that!

This year I shot at a big mule deer buck. It hit low struck a rock and went into outer space. I shot another arrow got a pass tjrough on a spike bull. I used that same arrow to to put a finishing shot on him 2 hours later. It went through both lungs his off side shoulder and stuck in the skin. When us ran off it broke the arrow. So I lost two arrows this year. But... the broad head is still good to go. I still have three deer tags here in NY to fill so we will see if I lose anymore.

I spined my Muley this year, and then walked up and put a second arrow in her.  Then she rolled over, snap snap, two arrows gone.  It's all part of the game.  I rather replace arrows and broad heads every now and then than pay a buck a bullet.  :party1:

When killing animals with arrows I don't look at it so much as "losing" them but rather as "using" them.  If the carbon doesn't fly then the game doesn't die.  When ethical shots are presented of course!

2 actually

1 cause I got tired and pulled the shot, it flew off into the woods after bouncing off the sand a couple times and I never found it. :bash:

the other was lost cause I was trying to show off and missed the target just barley at about 50 yards. Unfortunately it bounced right into nasty thick cover and I never found it either. :bash:

I gave myself about 70 yards worth of open shooting so that wouldent happen. its amazing how far those suckers can go after bouncing, on sand no less.

luckley they where my "cheap" arrows at about $5 a pop...LAME

This year i have donated 4 the first 2 fell out of my quiver during a 6 hr elk scout, so i went and bought 2 more, 1 of which fell out the next day,  >:( , i got back to camp and rigged a retainer out of para cord to last til i got home, i desided a new quiver was in order. Then during target shooting i lost 1 more, leaving me with a very un happy wife since i buy goldtips and g5 montecs. Leaving me down about $20 per arrow.
