Winthrop Road Closure
« on: September 27, 2011, 08:48:16 AM »
I was in Winthrop this weekend and just wanted to let any hunters know about a road closure in the area that may affect some of you and your hunting plans. The road closure is behind Pearrygin Lake. If you are familiar with the area it is the left off of Bear Creek Road past the gun range. It is the first main left on the gravel road past the second state park entrance. As you may know there was a large slide about a half mile up the road which was initially closed but is now open. If you head up past this washout about another mile or two go will go around a pond on your left. Once you pass this there is a large parking/wide area in road with a gate directly in front that is closed after Oct. 1st. This gate is closed every year. The new closure is the road to the left. Normally the lower gate is open and it is about 4-5 miles to the closed gate up this road. This year there is a washout that has closed this entire road down to the lower gate. There are normally a bunch of camps up this road so I just wanted to give a heads up if you are heading over that way.
I spoke with the Forest Service and this road will remain closed at least through this winter and there will be no motorized access beyond that gate.
Kind of affects my plans as I normally hike in a few miles from the other gate.
Good luck this year.

Is this on the Ramsey side of Pearrygin creek?

yes, the first road to your left once you pass the swamp/pond on your left.  Normally lower gate is not closed, just the upper gate.

Yeah, bunch of roads up there got so bad last winter that they wont have time to fix them for a while.

Be prepared for a bunch of HUNT WA members on ATVS going around the gate on the opener, cause they can

Apparantly road closures do not apply to those who own ATVs.

No motorized access around the gate per my phone call with forest service.  Also, this washout was just from June around the same time as the major washout near the gun range.

I am more worried about where all those hundreds of "Ramsey side" campers are going to go!  :yike:

I was thinking the same thing. That part of the road that is closed typically has a ton of campers on it. I did not see any signs when you first get on the road telling you of the closure so there will be a lot surprised hunters showing up Friday afternoon having to turn around and figure something else out. I still plan on hunting the area, we just might spike camp it in.

I know the enforcement up there won't go light on those who drive around their gates.  I hope they hammer every one who tries.  Also, I don't believe quads are even allowed on roads in that neck of the woods.
