Traditions Northwest Magnum Musket Cap Problem
« on: September 27, 2011, 03:22:22 PM »
Hey guys im new to muzzle loading, just bought a Traditions Northwest Mag. It only shoots musket caps. I've been having problems with getting the cap to light. Sometimes it lights first pull sometimes i have to reshoot 3 or 4 times. Yet even when it doesnt fire there is a distinctive dent on the cap, i don't know whether my caps are faulty or the hammer is not strong enough? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Ruger brought back the .220, i just shoot it.

OK now you have got me really interested.... I was in Kennewick today @ Wholesale Sports.  There was a gentleman at the return counter - tyring to return a NW Hunter for exactly the reason you are talking about... I wanted so bad to walk up him and tell go back in the gun department and get Big Horn - his problems would be over - I would have suggested a new Knight DISC but they do not  have any...
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

This is just my opinion, but with the DISC you have a more secure breech area and a stronger hammer-bolt assembly.

+ you have the option of scoping it and using 209 during a rifle season or one of those special ML season Washington has where you have to use a ML and yet it allows you use a modern ML...

In this picture you can see the breech area is more protected from weather and debris.  There is no way for the cap to fall off the post.

I sent this to Olymipia and they approved it... this when the gun is in the reday to fire position...

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

I have a couple buddies with the magnum and they all have the same problem, just get the number 11 nipple and switch it out with the musket and it will fire every time... shoulda bought the regular ole northwest edition, magnum seems to suck thus far

thanks adamR thats what im gonna do. Only reason i got the magnum edition was it has the pistol grip stock and the gun is my girlfriends and she feels comfortable with that stock. Goin back to Ranch and Home in Kennewick tomorrow to get the new nipple and NO11 caps...thanks guys!

ALSO had one more question...the manual on the NW mag says not to use No11 caps only musket caps...why would this be? Musket caps i believe spark more...but i could be wrong? You would think since the gun can handle muskets there should be no prob with No11s.

in my opinion only... the reason for this would be they do all kinds of research and testing with the magnum nipple and not the number 11 so if something did go wrong with the number 11 on there they are not responsible because they have a disclaimer that says you can't put number 11 nipples on the magnum.  my non magnum vortek says not to use the musket caps, however, a buddy of mine has the non-magnum and hes being using magnums in it since the day he bought it and nothing has gone wrong...

Nice, AdamR did your buddy have to order the No11 nipple from traditions or did he do a whole new breach and nipple? I went to ranch and home and they had none that would fit the magnum breach plug thats comes in it the gun. So i'm stuch with the unreliable musket caps for the weekend. I did remove the antagonist spring but i don't know if it'll help.

If you look threw the last couple pages on here there is a lot of that stuff happening to that gun. Plus a lot of other bad stuff. Sorry to hear about it.
