Narrowed down to 3...
« on: October 01, 2011, 09:26:16 PM »
Browning A Bolt, Winchester model 70, or Remington 700?

I am going to get a stainless barrel, a synthetic stock, and .300WSM.

Which would you buy and why?

I am going to get 300 opinions, and that is the reason I am asking.  First of all, I will shoot everything I hunt for with it.  Deer, Elk, and if lucky Antelope, Bear, Moose, or Goat.

I want one rifle, one bullet weight, and one cartridge to shoot everything with, and this is the round I have chosen.

Winchester model 70 , I would try reloading 165 nosler accubonds for your all around bullet, splits the 180 and 150 grain.

700, then A-bolt, in that order with a 180 grain boolit. Both will shoot great, lots more options, stocks, triggers, etc with the 700. Good luck and let us know what ya get.

The new Winchesters are nice.  I'd go with the model 70 Extreme Weather.  Some guys don't like the enclosed MOA trigger on the new model 70's.  I like it.

I own 1 of each but not in the caliber of your choice. a-bolt has 60 degree bolt throw & with a simple change of trigger spring it has 2.75# pull. 700 has x-mark trigger, mine (my wife's) has been adjusted to 3# pull. my Win is a classic sporter with controlled round feed. trigger adjusted to 2.5# & it has shot .323" center-to-center for 5 @ 100 with a hunting load. others very accurate as well. my a-bolt & 70 are wood but the 700 is synthetic, I pulled the pad & stuffed it with newspaper & use 1 of those elastic cartridge carriers that fit over the stock, helps with stealth, if bumped, scraped, etc. it is LOUD 'cause it's hollow.

Everyone has there favorite, (ford, chevy, dodge)!  Here is what you do, find a gun shop that has all 3 have them put all 3 side by side.  Start picking them up and shouldering them, then start the elimination process based on fit, feel and weight.  You'll find the one that fits YOU and feels best to YOU!  BTW, I used this method for my wife and we ended up with a Browning A-bolt in .308 that SHE felt was the best for HER,

one advantage the remington has (even though I consider all to be great firearms) is it is a tinker toy, you can change any part of it at any time for a great price. Need a shorter stock, easy. Want a cheap drop in trigger, done. They are the 350 of the gun world.

I had a Model 70 300WSM. Sold it to my dad. I shot 180s out of it and he does as well.

I like Winchesters and Remingtons. I won't own a Browning.

Well I went to the gun shop and handled all of the rifles.  They are all nice, each having a different fit and feel.  The Browning felt the best, especially the rougher composite stock, but it was an X-Bolt.  I really liked it.  After looking at the price tag, I think I am going to keep my Tikka and maybe have some work done to it.  I just cant get it dialed in.  I have a lite, stainless 300 wsm, and I cant get it to shoot better than a 4" group of 5 shots.  I have a leupold vx2 3-9x40, and I have checked all mounting hardware, tried multiple bullets, let it cool between shots, and clean it regularly.  I dont know what else to do...I was going to sell it, and buy a new rifle, but maybe I will take it to a gunsmith and see if they can figure it out, or re-mount the scope and re-bore sight it, and go from there.  Looks like the 25-06 is coming out of the safe for the deer opener this year!

most folks who have Tikkas rave about the accuracy, maybe try mounting a different scope to be sure that's not it? :dunno:
p.s. I was gonna suggest the x-bolt but I find it annoying when you named the 3 & folks start suggesting their favorites, like if you asked 30-06 or 280? & after five posts someone says 300win,wsm,ultra, another says 308, :chuckle: just saying

I do think it might be the scope.  It was a tack driver, 3 shots, 1/2 inch grouping.  took it out a month ago to check accuracy for opener, and it was barely on paper.  Re-bore sighted it at 25 yards with the laser, got it good at 50 yards, went to 100 yard range, and can keep a 4 inch group now.  Gonna go one more time this weekend and see if I can tighten that up a little more.  After a few shots with that thing, it might just be me at this point anticipating or jerking the trigger...

Something's gone on the blink with the Leupy....send it in for check-up.  If there is something wrong they will find it and fix it for nothing.
Break out the 25-06 and go hunting while your waiting the scopes return.

I really really would like to have a new model 70 featherweight! Theyre like $750, then you have to get nice optics to match the nice rifle, so it could easily get to over a grand.. I probably wouldnt take it outside except on clear sunny days.. I would still be using my marlin xs7 .308... But Id still love to have a model 70 to show off and ooo and awww over.
The Kimber rifles are pretty nice too if you wanna spend a bunch. Cooper of Montana would be even sweeter for even more money.
The Cabelas 50th anniversary edition model 70s are amazing... But theyre also 1800 bucks. I held one in the Gun Library in Cabela's. nice gun.

get your tikka tweaked ftw.

rem and winny have quality control issues so by default of the original three choices it would be the browning.

you didnt look at a savage weather warrior? Sako A7? CZ kevlar?

I was going to say the same thing.
The chances of a Tikka going south on accuracy(copper fouling could be an issue?) is slim.
The chances of a Leupold failing is much greater.
Let us know how you do.

Another possibility might be if you used the supplied Tikka scope rings, even though you have checked them.  Some have had issues with these, others have not.
If you are using the Tikka's, and while the scope is at the doctor, have Leupy pitch a set of rings in the box with the scope return.

I haven't heard of any "quality control issues" with the new FN made Winchesters.  The reviews have been very positive.  I am more than happy with my new Featherweight.  My next rifle will most likely be an Extreme Weather.

I am willing to bet that you are using the Tikka Rings right? GET RID OF THEM!!!!!

I would chose the Tikka over the other 3 you have listed. Your scope is a good choice. And keep in mind if the gun itself has a issue you can get ahold of tikka, they have a solid warranty. Same goes for Leupold.

I have all three brands and models of rifles in my safe.  I do like them all but I would rank them from top to bottom as Remington model 700, Browning(I have the A bolt not X bolt), then Winchester model 70.  I am a big fan of the .270.  I have shot deer for years with it and have shot several elk with it.  I have never had a problem.  I have not shot a bear at all so I can't say for that.  I shoot 130 grain but for elk I switch to 150 grain.

Tommorrow a buddy and I are going to lap my rings, re-mount the scope and try to sight it in.  I found three of the four mount screws "loose".  they werent obviously loose, but they were loose.  I feel like a dumb ass, but oh well.  I will get it figured out.  I will probably get some new rings for it after hunting season, but I live far from a "quality" sporting goods store, so I will work with what I have for now, and then make permanent fixes later.  Hopefully that is all it is, is the scope mounts, and after lapping them and re-mounting I am sure I will be fine for deer and elk season.  Or the .280 or 25-06 are going to come out of the safe.

Thanks for all the opinions, and I will update after this weekend if I get it nailed down.

Lapped the rings on the Tikka and mounted the scope.  Took it to the range, bore sighted it, then shot it and got it dialed in.  Nothing was wrong with the scope or the rifle, it was just the rings, and the mounting of the scope.  Thanks for all the replies.
