I didn't call another one! (Got pictures)
« on: October 02, 2011, 10:04:31 AM »
Now, it is the last three coyotes I've seen afoot whilst in the field came to my attention before I could break out the calls.  This one was in Sacajawea State Park, so I was hunting with a lens, only.  Light was pretty dim for the first shot, which came before direct light fell tot he ground.

He showed up just as I had set my pack down, and before I could get set up with a tripod, so this is a handheld shot in dim light (1600 ISO). He let me get a half dozen shutter snaps before he disappeared in the grass. I got set up, hoping perhaps later to call an "unaware" coyote to my location.

It was not to be.  As I settled in, my coyote began a warning bark routine from behind some trees, just 100 yds away.  I took a new position, to look better in that direction, and he rewarded me with another shot opportunity. After he took this peek, he disappeared and was not heard from again.  I did not use my calls, so perhaps that will work on a future stand, hopefully in better light for pictures (than the first image).

Had a nice morning taking pictures (shooting some birds, too).

Nice pictures Ivar. You are just reinforcing my theory, you bring the camera and I bring the rifle. :IBCOOL: You can then take the pictures of the coyote and me. :chuckle:   :chuckle:
May you have a target rich environment!

For my next picture, I'd like to get one where the yote's attention isn't on me, suggesting that maybe I could keep one 'unaware' or curious for a while.  This guy had me busted before I sat down.  I'll defintely select a different approach, next time.  What sucks (photgraphically at least) is that there are few practical approaches in this park at dawn that will put approaching coyote 'down sun' of you.

Very nice pics.  Question: were you in camo? the yote definately has you busted.  My bet is if you were in an area with more hunting pressure (not a state park) they never would have given you this opportunity as they would have been more savy to your game.  You might try an electronic caller, camo, and a motorized decoy if you want the yote looking elsewhere.  They have pretty sharp eyes so using a blind to hide your movement might also help you keep them unawares.

good hunting.

Helix, I was in full hunting regalia, ghilley and all.  But I was still trying to occupy my position.  I'd set up my tripod, but hadn't taken my seat yet or begun calling. He busted me all right. He was only 75 yards out!

I went back to the same park, and set up differently (about 1/4 mile away) on Saturday AM.  It was a beautiful morning, but no coyotes came to my call.  I saw deer and birds.

I really do like capturing them on film.  (I wish my shutter release was quieter!)
