wynoochee elk
« on: October 02, 2011, 07:55:54 PM »
I'm moving to Matlock this week. Just in time to get a few days scouting for elk in the wynoochee unit before modern deer season opens.

I'm sure there is some elk around my new house. But can anyone give me a little better idea where to start?

For reference I'm living on the Matlock-Brady rd. Less then 2 miles from the wynoochee unit.

Thanks

Tough area to hunt.  Access is a little difficult at this time.  But, there is elk there for the guy who is not afraid to walk.  I would start by going up the west end of the unit.  Be some pressure in this area but, again get off the road.  Do not ignore coming in from the north side.  I would also go up the Wishka unload my bicycle and cover some ground.  That said, I hope you do not locate any of my late season honey holes :chuckle:

I wear a pair of boots out every season so walking in is no problem for me. I also will have horses if I want to ride in areas

Modern firearm in the wynoochee can be out of control with hunters, but there's elk there. Most guys just road hunt its not too hard to get away from the crowds.
