Apparently my rifle is too loud??
« on: October 02, 2011, 08:38:59 PM »
I was shooting at the range today and could hear some others nearby griping about my rifle's muzzle blast. It's a T/C Encore and I was shooting my .300 win mag barrel which has a Defensive Edge muzzle brake on it. I know they're kinda loud but when you're at the range which is under a roof and walled in, don't you kinda expect the high powered rifles to be pretty dang loud?? They quit griping about my rifle when the fellow with the .300 Roy with the brake showed up and sat down next to me. The first time that thing went off was the last I heard anyone complaining about my rig.
 :chuckle:
What if I was shooting an ultra mag or something...

It's not so much the sound of it when you're sitting next to someone who has a rifle with a brake, it's the shock wave that hits you. It's really un-nerving when trying to squeeze off a shot and that guy lets loose with the braked rifle. I lose my concentration with one of those going off next to me and I will generally not shoot until that guy is done.

I waited till the guy next to me shot before I shot. He was joking around with me about it. Him and his .243

Anyway...I've been shooting that thing at the range for 3 years or so now with no complaints. Maybe I was on borrowed time.

I've heard that when I shot my 16" ar. Then someone shot the same gun next to me and I felt the pressure wave myself.  :chuckle:

Eh, what did you say? i saw your lips moving but cant hear you  :o,  I have 2 rifles with brakes, dont seem to affect me and i am the person closest to it when it goes off. Although i have felt the shockwave from other guys rifles, even conventional guns.
What range did you go to, and was it full to the hilt with the one weeked a year hero's :chuckle:
I took my nephew to kenmore last weekend, we got there at opening, had the first round go with only 4 shooters, next round was fullup, had him wait 10 minutes after the shooting began for the guys around him to blast there shots off then he was fine.

I have an adjustable break on my 300 and wow what a difference it is when you open it up.  Also.  Blows the dust off the bench everytime.

The brakes usually direct off the sound/pressure off to the side and sometimes slightly back.  Usually the shooter doesn't get the blast, but three or four feet to any side and it gets noisy.

So I've never done any research on muzzle breaks. Do they reduce recoil? If so were they made for women and children? People with frail builds? Office workers? Won't a "sissy" pad do the same thing?

I prefer not to shoot next to someone using a brake myself, pretty tough to concentrate with the guy next to you blowing your hat off with his SIDEWAYS directed muzzle blast.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.
