I also own the VTR but in 308. I was going to sell my SPS to get the VTR in the 22-250 but decided to keep the SPS. When I was looking fro the VTR 22-250 I had a horrible time locating one, not to get your hopes down. The VTR is a great little brush gun with the 22'' barrel on it but it is loud with the ports up front. Leopold VXL 2.5-10x45 with the 30mm tube is what Ive put on the VTR. On my SPS I put a VXIII 6.5-20x50 with the 30mm tube. It also has the varmint hunter reticule on it. With that varmint hunter reticule you can dial you scope in with pinpoint accuracy because it is built basically for a 22-250. Check it out on Leupold's website. Your first crosshair is set at 200 then the next several are for 3,4, and 500 yards. It also has windage dots for up to 20mph cross winds.

The 243 loaded with 55 nosler BT is serious coyote medecine. 223 is hard to beat for for ammo availability, and cost. I have both, never had a 204, had a Browning B-78 22-250 and a bull barreled M77 22-250, sold both, wish I still had the B-78...

I just signed up and had the same problem. Ended up with the buying a Remington model 788 in a 22-250, I love the older rifles. you can see my post on Primos web site and check out the response i got. good hunts!

Like the Howa varminter, submoa weatherby, and tikka's. They all shot very well and are on the cheaper side of the rifles out there.

It sounds like your kid would be better off with the 22-250.
However I would rather have the 204 myself. I like the idea that there is usually less recoil and the scope doesn't jump me off target with the 204. That way I can see the impact of the round very clearly. Not to mention I already have a .223
