Spokane area butcher????
« on: October 04, 2011, 12:28:37 PM »
I am taking my family hunting west of Spokane around Edwall and Reardan.  I was wondering if someone could let me know about a butcher in that area.  I am just looking for a place where I can have the deer (if we are lucky enough to get some) hung in a cooler till we are done with our hunt and heading home.

PLEASE NOTE:
Crown mixes all the meat together to make burger, sausage, etc. Meaning they take like 20 deer and mix it up and you get your weight back...not deer. I kinda lost it when I discovered that. Maybe I'm naive and they all do it. I now butcher and grind. Good luck.

most butcher's I have talked with won't hang it for you unless you are gonna contract them to do the cutting.

One place that is proven and it is Dunham's.  Hands down.  Sonnenberg maintains his license but no longer cuts unless you know Clyde personally.  Stay far away from Eggers!  Again Dunham is the place.  I am not usually very opinionated but in this case I can save you the learning curve.

I will stay away from Dunhams thats the first place I wouldnt go! and thats a personal issue I will not divulge

The other hand all eggers are not equal...the south hill one is known for its wild game and sausage/jerky.

Bring it to Tom's Custom Meat in Medical Lake/Four Lakes. Last time I checked, he was cheapest around and he does an awaesome job. You will get your meat! Not someone else's. It's also the closest to where you will be hunting.

Been going to dunhams for awhile and never had a problem, fair price and they always give me plenty of meat back, and they mix beef fat into hamburger, plus their pep sticks and smokies are delicious.

Hunt nw, why problem did you have with them?  If they have unsanitary practices it would be good to let everyone know.

Heard good things about Tom's too.  Actually had a issue at Dunham last year so I guess I was picking the lessor of evils.  Doing my own now but understand your just looking for a fridge so Tom's may work out for that being a small town butcher.

I didn't know they were criminals but I actually like the bone in my deer steaks, never enjoyed them so much until they cut it bone in, everyone like their steaks different though.

No real big problems on my end I still think they are the best to go to from what is available.  My issue was a decent size bull a couple years ago and the backstrap steaks I got back was less than half of what it should have been.  I do think I got all the lbs back just too much of it was burger.  Short ribs, backstrap steaks, roasts, etc all to little and a whole lot of burger.  It was the only issue I have had in over 13 years with them but my last one.   As the cost may be fair I just got to the point were I can spend the money on the equipment and control what I want.  To ramble on a little more I just think the old man is getting old and has lost control of the operation.  He never was very conversational but we always use to have a repore with each other until recently.  With all that said I still refer people there in good faith.

Does anyone know of a locker I can rent some space to hang deer in? We do all our own butchering but I dont have anywhere to age the meat. I called Tom's, Dunham's, Crown, and Eggers. They won't hang it unless they are processing it. I usually hunt Idaho and my inlaws have a full meat shop with two walk ins but I don't want to drive 4 hrs each way. I'd like to hang for 5-7 days and will gladly pay for the space. On a side note, I plan on buying a walk in a setting up a permanent meat shop for my own use this summer. If any Spokane area hunters want to help in exchange for use let me know.

I will never be going back there. I took a bear there and said all.sausage. got it back and when you cut the casing it was like sand pouring out. So dry you couldn't eat it. Like eating sand. All of it was like that. I do my.own butcheeing. But take to beggars for sausage. In enough quantity to get my own batch back.

Most of the local butchers won't hang it unless they are going to be processing it.  If you plan on having it processed, Steve at Egger Meats on the south hill will do a fine job.  He always has and always will show sincere appreciation for your business, and the meat you get is from your deer and your deer only.

Tom's not taking wild game this year. Too  many regulation changes. Just spoke with them this morning.
