old blewett pass question

went up and scouted Old blewett pass yesterday and threw out a few trail cams. My buddy has a cabin up on the private side and have permission to hunt the neighbors land. we didnt see much of anything but some old sign and quite a few grouse. i noticed it was quite steep and pretty thick. im not afraid to hike and beat through brush. i was wondering if any of you guys had any tips on how to hunt this area. is it better to hike up high and sit and class clear cutts or stock. or hunt the thick stuff. thank you for your time.

Hunt the private land if you can and hope for some nasty weather. There were easily 300+ guys hunting on that system of roads last year on the modern opener on quads, horse, foot, truck, whatever. 27 pickups parked at the 7322 gate.  Have fun.........

Yeah it's funny how they have big signs posted in that area that say "NO ATV'S ALLOWED ANYWHERE BEHIND THIS SIGN" (or something to that effect) yet people are riding their 4 wheelers anywhere and everywhere.

we have a cabin on the left side with 40+ acres thats all private. im not to sure what kind of area muleys like to hang out in. should i hike high and hunt clear cutts or stay in the timber or the creek bottoms. thanks for your guys input

Your best bet is to get away from other hunters, wherever that may take you. Public land mule deer are by nature pretty reclusive.

Think about where you have seen deer during the late summer and where they will go when a swarm of pumpkins appears at daylight on the 15th.

Google earth the area you are talking about hunting.. Check and see where all the public roads are and see if you 40+ acres will be a haven for mulies to hide out. I whould take a good look at where choke points and hunter pressure are likely to be.

Last year a couple ATV riders got busted up there riding around. It is legal however to ride their quads in behind "the gate".....

I like what Special T said  goole earth the Area then you will have a better Idea where the deer will be. try to stay as far from other hunters as possible. should be a good hunt !!!

Remington- Are you sure about the quads being legal behind the gate? It's gated for a purpose and it is NF land. No quads allowed on NF land unless they are Green Dot that I know of.

The gated area he is referring to has been set aside specifically for quad riders, no trucks.

Green dot is a WA DNR designation.  Applies to state lands. 

The 7322 road is about the only legal ATV road on USFS in Chelan County and that area has payed dearly for it.  It has been way over hunted for the past decade.

Don't worry about the fact there are a lot of atv hunters. In an area i have hunted there are LOTS of ATV hunters, and they rarely get off them, or very far from them. Think of them like pushers and you get to sit tight and be the blocker. I recomend sitting tight for the first 2 days in a good spot at the edge of you private land and the public. A tree stand would be great or just a good place to sit... Make sure you scout it out ahead of time so you don't have to ELMER FUD around. Good luck!
