Initial test using a cell phone as an electronic game caller

I took my cell phone, downloaded some rabbits in distress, and some fawns in distress MP3 files. Set it to play, and laid it on a stump, then walked back downwind about 70 feet.

I didnt see anything, but I did get almost an immediate response from what was probably deer. Its not terribly loud, but then again a rabbit wouldnt be barkin at 50 watts either.

Seems like if you were in a stand, it might be just the ticket, for something in the area, and its free since most of us have cell phones anyway.

Set the sound wav as the ringer and set it up on a stump. Then set back a ways and hit redial on another phone occasionally.

I use a ipod hooked up to a PA speaker and small amp it is all about the size of a foxpro and costed about $40.  I just download mp3 of different sounds and use them and then i create sequences on the computer of the sounds and use those in the field with a hand call in addition.

I just was amazed at how I dont have to spend some hundred of dollars to get the latrst gadget to get a bear or deer in to shot range. I can just use something as simple as a cell phone, and I got a significant response. Not an animal in the clearing, but a result none the less.

Perhaps if I had given it more time, or found longer duration mp3's I could really get a good response. My biggest worry is using my cell and having it get wet, or getting it messed up. I also use it as a back up for rescue, and communicating for backup in tracking should I need it.

What do you mean by "significant response? Did you get an animal to move closer to your phone when you tried it? If you heard an animal move away from you I would not consider this a good result. I have farted while on a deer stand and chased deer away, and this was done for free.

I burped one day while sitting on a stand. A few seconds later I heard a buck snort back behind me. Scared the crap outta me. Each time I burped he would snort back. Finally I could not contain myself any longer and started to laugh.

Heh, what I meant by a "significant response" was  two or more animals charging through the brush to both my left and right. Not rain drops or something that could be mistaken for movement in the trees, but bona-fide movement toward my cell phone.

That is funny, you were issuing a burping challenge to that buck. ill have to remember that. LOL

I have used my I phone to call in a coyote before he was on the wrong side of the fence though so I didnt get him that day.

A friend of mine used a cell phone but had a problem with the light coming on so she put it in her backpack.  Starting calling in the fading light and heard a faint noise and suddenly her backpack is launching.  Apparently a hawk or owl came for it and grabbed the pack and got it off the ground before letting go of it.

Oh that's a good idea, I just got a new cell phone, now I know what I can do with my old one..... it's still good for pictures and sounds..... LOL! great thanks for the idea!!

I used my cell phone and a Cass Creek Power horn speaker ($40) for two years before I bought a Foxpro Spitfire.  Worked great and called in lots of critters.

will have to give this a try, but I am not sure you can use electric calls while large game hunting. but the Yotes.
