Dads idaho moose hunt.....(in progress, pics added)
« on: October 01, 2011, 09:11:24 PM »
Dad was drawn for idaho moose (we put in for a fathers day gift)...he  went over yesterday...little bro went with, seen 5 moose when we spoke to him late morning...sounds like it is going to be a pretty good hunt! THey ran into a few elk hunters...all they saw have been wolves...pops and bro ran into two elk as well. I will update with pics as I can...I hope to head over soon and bag a wolf. Pops and lil bro both have wolf tags too...

So...stay tuned..more will come...will dad get an Idaho moose...?

Well ladies and gents....

We (my brother and I) headed out Weds night...drove through the night. Got into camp at 330am. Slept till 5. Got up and headed out with pops. He was just telling us about his adventures, etc...it was rainy and fog was settling...He mentioned about a smaller moose he passed on opening day...we round a corner and a camp he had chatted with before had bagged that same moose about 600 yards from their camp. Hit in the spine with a 30-06, the moose didnt move a step, but piled up.

Excited, my brothers and I asked if we could help the married couple drag it out..they accepted of course. Down the hill we go, we were able to get the moose out in about 3 hours or so. It was only a 100 yards or so down a nasty hill.

Dad came back after a bit and helped out too. We then chatted with them, they gave us some buffalo burger and good company and then off we went.

The next two days consisted of a lot of driving (due to the freezing cold, wet, foggy crappy weather). My brother had a small game tag and we were able to get some grouse for dinner (see pic below). Grouse/mashed tatters and gravy worked out great! Once the weather cleared, we were able to see how gorgeous the country really was. Its a shame to have to leave right when the weather was going a bit better...but thus is life.

We were blessed enough to see bears, 5 moose, a monster 7 X bull elk, 2 wolves (see story in wolf forum section), a red fox, several two point deer, and many other cool, great moments.

Having never seen a moose in the wild, it was a trip to remember for me, in addition, the wolves were something I will never forget. I have a wolf tag and plan on returning to Idaho as soon as I can, to fill it.

On another note, I found it sad that in a unit that you can shoot any bull elk, we only saw 5 elk the whole time we were there (not just this weekend for us, but the whole previous week for my dad and other brother). We saw almost more wolves than we did moose in a day! Pops is still there for another week, so hopefully he can seal the deal. I will post more pics, if he comes back with anything good!

Awesome, great photos, I'm heading over there tomorrow for elk, same general area you were in, not too far from Avery.  Looks like it's going to be wet!
