Bear Scat Question? And hunters not following DNR rules.
« on: October 10, 2011, 07:26:11 AM »
So, couple of questions.  While at a different spot than usual the other day I ran across some bear scat (shown below).  It was MUCH bigger in diameter and contained much more total substance than any feces I have ever seen out of a bear.  What does the larger diameter mean?  I'm betting this turd is a good 1.5" to 2" diameter, and the photo doesn't do it justice.  The total volume is probably 3x the normal I see at least compared to the others in that area.  Is this a real big bear or does he just have different plumbing?  :dunno:

On a sidenote, over the weekend I was up on some DNR land south of Granite Falls, some jerk decided he was going to drive into the DNR land, past a gate that says no motor vehicles.  Four trucks parked at the gate and walked like you are supposed to.  We walked 2.5 miles and 1500 ft uphill.  Only to find this jerk up top.  He actually had the kahunas to ask me if I'd seen anything.  I responded with "You know you're not supposed to drive up here right..." when he responded "...yes"  I gave him a "cool" and continued about my way.  Just livid.  Here everyone else is following the rules and you think you can just drive around, mess up everyone's hunt AND break the rules.  Took restraint not to go tire slashing.  So here's a photo for the wall of shame.  I have license plates as well, but I'm working on further restraint.  :bash:

Thats most likely a medium sized bear and he's been gorging on blackberries.

Yeah, I've got a nice zoomed in shot of the plates.  I still feel like with both of those they won't actually do anything, aside from maybe sending an angry letter.

Turn the plate # into DNR...  We all need to do this every time we see someone do this kind of crap...

As for the Xterra.... poor sap was probably told it was a great off road vehicle....   :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

When I hike into areas, I have learned to take my dikes (electrician speak for wire cutters) with me. They work beautifully on valve stems.  :chuckle:

i know where that is at. had the same thing happen to me. Hike up there and was just getting ready to hunt and here comes a land rover.

Side note, early in the season we brought a bear down from the top all the way to the gate.

Alright, it appears I'm not outta line.  I'm sending the plate pic and car pic in to DNR.  Hopefully DNR expands on the message I delivered to the XTerra drivers.

Funny but dangerous during hunting season with everyone having loaded weapons..

What is it with people always posting pictures of bear poop. That is definitely bear poop. Hard to say how big, I've laid some pretty big eggs before...

A lot of poeple see coyote poop and think its bear poop. I have seen bear poop as big around as a pop can.

Too bad people like the guy in the xterra have to be like that. Especially with several rigs parked at the gate.

2 of the 4 at the gate had discover passes (that includes mine), didn't see one on the Xterra.  There is no sign there saying they're required, but I think technically all DNR requires them by the way the law is written.

Just sent the plate information, photo and photo of the car into DNR.  Not that you'd want to have them have to do it, but I advised they maybe put a lock back on that gate.  At least then people doing it right won't be disturbed I guess.  Hopefully it is worth the effort.

Haha, yeah, I know you have.  There should be a new lock on the gate next time you go up, so you don't get disturbed by people target practicing out of their truck up at the pit.

Good thought, hadn't considered that.  But upon further consideration I'd hate to be the person that smashed my windows.  Fear will not hold me back!  (But thanks for the thought, I'll watch myself.)

well the gate at the bottom has been broken since spring bear season, and if the dnr would fix it you would not get people like this up there.when i turned my key in this year i told them about the gate and they told me they would tell the proper people about it.well i can see its high on there list.i took a great bear out of there in 08. good luck and after you give the dnr the plate #tell them again about the gate.
