Who's going to be Hunting on the Snake River
« on: October 10, 2011, 07:55:20 AM »
Was wondering if anybody has been doing some scouting on the snake river near pullman? I have heard that the numbers out there were going to be good again this year. Bagged my first deer out there last year and headed back again. Can't wait, this is going to be a long week at work.

My brother said his friend was doing some scouting over there this weekend and saw two poached deer, both 2x2's. Pretty sad to see.

What do you mean by poached?? Could have been the 2x2 special muzzle permits?

I flew the river about 4 weeks ago in my dad's airplane and didn't see a lot.  Good Luck!

He said that there were two 2x2's shot and left dead on some public property. Looks like they had been there for awhile.

My son is a sophmore at WSU.  He would love to deer hunt can you provide me some guidence so that he can get a couple of days in?  Killing something is not necessarily a success.  I can pick up some Quad maps from the State to identify the state property.

What would you recommend?  He is a rifle hunter for deer, but I can give him my muzzlestuffer.  This year will not work out for him but I am looking for next.

What are your thoughts?

I'll be honest, state land around here is a joke, there are a couple places but they get hammered like none other. 99% of the land here is private so talking to land owners would be the way to go. I usually do muzzleloader(taking my dad out for modern this year) You will generally have better success getting permission...Either Muzzle loader(just sheer lack of hunters in comparison to modern) or doe tag being drawn will help get your foot in the door at a lot of places. And with muzzle loader you can take mulie bucks or white bucks or  white tail does so thats always a plus.Muzzle loader early season about the last week of sept ad is unit 142 and late season right around thanksgiving is unit 139 is open. Without giving specifics(still new in this area myself) I would say take him out for a drive and anything you see that looks like good hunting go up and knock, you would be suprised with how many yes' you can get as long as your not going out the day before season or anything.

I will second that.  Go after modern is over and you will get more positive responses.  Also, those places in the breaks that are crowded during modern aren't so crowded during muzzy.

Hunting the breaks is going to be busy, get there early and find a spot to sit a glass. Get's pretty crazy opening weekend. But that also means that they are getting pushed around alot also. Just got some permission on some private land for opener. Don't be afriad to ask. Most farmers love the deer hunter's as long as you respect there land and rules.
