Steel shot
« on: October 10, 2011, 11:35:17 AM »
Pretty new to bird hunting, I hear that Hevi-Shot Hevi-Metal is one of the best for steel shot shells. any other good ones out there?

It's also expensive. I seem to have fine luck with Kent Fasteel (think that's it).

The enviro-metal stuff is all good but it will cost you. I'm a fan of spending my money on practice in the off season and using 3" steel number 2 at ranges that I know I will crush.

I like the Kent steel, but man if it gets wet the stuff is no good like a missile out of your gun. I used to reload steel a lot. I used to reload a 2 3/4" Federal Gold Metal Hull, with 800X powder, it was a duplex load of BBB and 3's pushing 1550 FPS it was good stuff "smacked em". :chuckle:
I usually just use Winchester I like the way the hulls are sealed at the top and Remington has some good loads too for steel. That hevishot is expensive.

I have a few cases of Kent.  I also purchased the Winchester Xpert, but if your shooting ducks over the decoys you will have no issues with it.  If your having issues with it, your probably shooting out further than you think.  If your taking longer shots you may want to invest in some of the Hevi-metal or heavy shot.  It carries the down range energy further allowing for less cripples.
Again it doesn't matter what shot you use if your a poor shot.  You can shoot the most expensive stuff on the market and still get lack luster performance if you are not practiced up.
I am able to make the inexpensive stuff work great as I get out and shoot a lot of rounds down range.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

 :yeah:

Or you could say that a little different as "It doesn't matter what shot you use if your a good shot."

Taking shots you can make will out perform magic bullets every time   :chuckle:
