Squidding

I have always tried to go on slack high tide. Does anyone know if one tide is better than another. I usually go to Les Davis in Tacoma and the current can det whipping pretty good on tide change.

Usually I do best when the tide is on it's way in. Slack I don't do bad but not any better than as its going out for the first hour or so. Cloudy/New moon is the best. If that all combines with no wind or seals or otters then you should leave with a really heavy bucket.

  drove down to edmonds tonight.  one guy on the whole peir, with 9 squid about 6 inches.  he had been there since 6 and its 9:30 now.  water was down.

good to hear the big ones are coming back. Kinda got weirded out when I caught one smaller than my jig.

Seems they are late this year all over.  I went out to my normal place for the first time over the weekend and only had 2 squid for 2 hrs.  Lots of people, same result.  I was going to take some pics, but since I only had the 2 squid, I will wait to post a pic with some squid to show.  Gave my 2 squid away to a kid and his dad, they hadnt had any luck in 3 trips.  Gave them some tips and where to get the better squid jigs.  Hope they have better luck now.  Good luck all, can't wait to see some pics of your success.

OK, So the wife told me she wouldnt be home until late, so I said what the heck, give it a try because its not raining.  I ended up with 9 squid for 2 hrs.  Not bad, hopefully this means the squid are starting to show.  Had a few other people there with around the same amount or more.  Good night for squidding!  I know people have asked to show the basic squid set up.  Here are some pics to show the set up I use.  You can change it up to your preference.  I also posted a pic of the finished product ready to be cut and fried into Calamari.

That is great. thanks for posting the pics. Some massive 'eyes' on them. How long to clean 10 lbs? looks like alot of work.

WOW, what a haul.  Good to see someone with their limit.  Hope I can have my bucket that full soon.

I think thats the first time I've seen an actual limit. Looks like that 10 lbs would displace way more than 5 quarts. Do they measure whichever you get first if you get checked or whichever way makes you legal?

I see you have heads too, do you eat the heads? WHat abou the beaks?

By heads I take it you mean the part with tentacles and not the mantle. The tentacles are great, we just let them sit a little longer in the buttermilk to soften them up. The beaks? I've never heard of any way to eat them. Doubt that I'd ever try. I love how simple it is to clean those things. Minus the turning them inside out part on the smaller ones. Getting better at it tho.

The beaks have been removed.

The squid I used to catch off Central America had hard little toothed cups in each suction cup.  I like the tentacles better than the rest.  I am glad our local ones don't have this issue, though the others were up to 6X bigger.  I'd like to try to get there soon.
