The ones we got weren't Humboldts.  They had mantles from 10 to 16 inches long and were about 2 1/2 inches around.  They were very yummy!

Does anyone know of squidding in the San Juans?

I was there from 8:30 to midnight.  One guy caught a bunch, a few people caught a few and my friend and I caught none.  Nice night on the dock though.

Gotta see what everyone else is using. I use duolock swivels so I can change weights/colors/shapes quickly. Usually the difference is technique tho. Sometimes I kill them with a slow sink, sometimes they like quicker action. Sometimes high, or low. Sometimes they'll only bite on a retrieve. They're some moody *censored*s but once you figure out what they want that night you can usually slay them.

The squid were only 4-6" long.  Might need micro jigs.  I moved right next to the guy catching the most and mirrored his cast, drop, and retrieve.  Oh well....

Were you able to communicate with him?

A "noodlier" rod might have helped, though with all those little hook prongs it is hard to imagine they could get off of it if they grabbed on.  I'm kind of glad I didn't have a bunch of those tiny things to clean at 1 a.m.

I agree  :chuckle:
but those hook prongs only work on the way up, barbless, like needles, but squid only really grab on with 2 of their legs, so unless the prongs get a grip, they can let go.
if they get "stuck" is when they wrap the other legs trying to escape.
