I have had good luck with Nosler Custom Ammo! Grain size depends on the gun but for my 30.06 I use the 165gr and my 300wsm I use the 180gr partition!

I use 200 grain Accubond 300 Ultra Mag hand loaded with Hodgdon Retumbo.  This goes for elk as well.  Deadly accurate and consistant.  With light winds I will not hesitate to take an 800 - 1000 yard shot.

best advice for FNG is look at the box before you buy, nearly every maker of modern ammunition puts a picture or chart on the box showing what they intended that ammo to be used for when it was made. I.E. a buck on 30-06 150gr psp, pic of elk on 180's, ground squirrels on 223 50gr, etc. etc.
good luck and be safe out there people!

I usually run my Ruger .243 and 85 TSX, but I'll be carrying my Tikka T3 .300 WSM with 180 Nosler SolidBases this weekend.

IMO,165s are the best all around choice for an '06. I shoot 165gr Accubonds out of mine.

Interesting to see the guys with the big magnums shooting light bullets. Light bullets look good at first, but the heavier stuff outperforms the light bullets as the range increases.

I would have to agree with that.  I used to shoot 180 grains but switched to 200s after finding they were much more accurate in the 300 RUM.  Never looked back after that.  The gun, scope, bipod weighs 20 pounds but the extreme confidence I have in it makes it worth it.

One thing that is a must for me with a heavy rifle is a Safari Sling.  Only place I have seen them is Cabelas or onling.  Man they sure work nice if you like to spot and stalk.

Except on the short mags. I did a study on the win mag and the win short mag (which I have), and the win mag did better with 180 grain than the short mag did. The short mag did better with 165 and 150 grain than the win mag did.

Deer die easy from any decent hit with a decent bullet.

Over the decades I've seen them fall instantly when struck by bullets from .243" - .458" and even .50 cal muzzle loaders. Never saw a bit of difference in killing power from the little .243 vs the .30-06 or the various magnums. It's where you hit 'em, not so much what they're hit with.

Hunt with what pleases you and your hunting style. Place the bullet well, you'll have venison.

I have to agree with you Guy its ALL about the placement.I hunt Wa. with a .50 cal muzzleloader but when I go to Wy or Mt I take my browning A-bolt in.270 shooting 130 remington corelokts.I've tried other ammo but this gun prefers the corelokts. My advice is to try a bunch of different ammo and find which one your rifle shoots the best and stick to it and know what it will do at ranges of 25yds out to 400.My rifle in particular is dead on at 200 + 3inches at 100 and -7 at 300 and every deer i've hit in the boiler room has gone no more then 50yds.

I shoot 180 Barnes TTSX handloads out of my 300 weatherby. 78 grains of RL 19 seems to be the sweet spot for that bullet and gun, I'm confident up to 500 yards on deer with that gun, although with these little dark horned blacktails I can't see the points at that distance very well unless I'm near my truck and have my spotting scope, so like to keep it under 400. Its put down everything I've managed to hit with it real quick like.

I just started playing with some 110 grain barnes TTSX bullets for an upcoming antelope hunt, man those things are smokin, although I wouldn't use it on deer because of the energy loss at longer range.

Everyone has said what they use and probably they have all gone out and shot various brands  and sizes of bullets through their rifles to see what shoots and groups the best for their gun.  THAT is a MUST find out what your gun likes  what can you shoot and still end up with 1 inch groups at 200 yards.  MY Browning 06 loves 180 Sierra SBT handloads 58.5 gr IMR 4350 Federal 215 mag primers but that is my rifle  Gotta see what yours does the best with
