IMO,165s are the best all around choice for an '06. I shoot 165gr Accubonds out of mine.

Interesting to see the guys with the big magnums shooting light bullets. Light bullets look good at first, but the heavier stuff outperforms the light bullets as the range increases.

I would have to agree with that.  I used to shoot 180 grains but switched to 200s after finding they were much more accurate in the 300 RUM.  Never looked back after that.  The gun, scope, bipod weighs 20 pounds but the extreme confidence I have in it makes it worth it.

I use slugs(when I hunt Modern) due to firearm restrictions in GMU 410.  They work just fine

I can see why you're worried about packing water. That rifle is a beast. :yike:

One thing that is a must for me with a heavy rifle is a Safari Sling.  Only place I have seen them is Cabelas or onling.  Man they sure work nice if you like to spot and stalk.

Except on the short mags. I did a study on the win mag and the win short mag (which I have), and the win mag did better with 180 grain than the short mag did. The short mag did better with 165 and 150 grain than the win mag did.

Deer die easy from any decent hit with a decent bullet.

Over the decades I've seen them fall instantly when struck by bullets from .243" - .458" and even .50 cal muzzle loaders. Never saw a bit of difference in killing power from the little .243 vs the .30-06 or the various magnums. It's where you hit 'em, not so much what they're hit with.

Hunt with what pleases you and your hunting style. Place the bullet well, you'll have venison.

I have to agree with you Guy its ALL about the placement.I hunt Wa. with a .50 cal muzzleloader but when I go to Wy or Mt I take my browning A-bolt in.270 shooting 130 remington corelokts.I've tried other ammo but this gun prefers the corelokts. My advice is to try a bunch of different ammo and find which one your rifle shoots the best and stick to it and know what it will do at ranges of 25yds out to 400.My rifle in particular is dead on at 200 + 3inches at 100 and -7 at 300 and every deer i've hit in the boiler room has gone no more then 50yds.
