Teanaway
« on: October 15, 2011, 05:21:06 PM »
Opening day at Teanaway went... rough at best. Besides the fact that everyone and their mom went out to Teanaway, I happened to lose the pack of 4 does and a buck I was following the night before. But hey, there's always tomorrow! :cue:

Woods are full this weekend.  I just went out for a photo trip, and it was NASTY.   Cost me a tire because of some idiot.  I guess since tomorrow is Sunday, and I won't have a spare.....

The guy could have easily got off the road but he kept coming.  Forced me to get off in the bad *censored* and I punctured it in some sharp basalt. 10 ply.  Not the tires fault.  Spun on it and it was like a dagger.   Then had to drive a bit to get where I could get it off.  I'm sure I ruined it.

Good luck.....i have a friend hunting over there this weekend. My brother went with him but is not hunting.....fishing and messing with his rc rock crawler at camp. I stopped hunting there a few years ago because of all the people. It is just to easy/close for those of us coming from the wet side.....therefore too many hunters. I wish you the best of luck ...be safe.

Yea still up here an am yet too see a single deer. Probably dont help that there a ton of controlled burns an a ton of loggers with chainsaws, its hard to be sneaky with them around.

What a zoo.  Was there an article about hunting the Teanaway in a magazine?  It seemed that there was a truck parked along the main road every 100 yards or so, all the way down river even past the store.  It is a good thing that people are getting into hunting, I like to see that.  However, sitting 50 yards from the county road in blaze orange might not be the best strategy.  True though, there's been a few times when I've been hiking around the mountain all day and then when I return there's a deer right next to the truck.  It could work.  Maybe get back in there a little farther.

My wife reported that the same crowd had visited the North Bend Safeway earlier in the day.  The store was full of guys in camo loading up on power bars, and other dietary essentials for deer camp.

The only success I heard of this past weekend was from a group of mexicans.  They get six or so people and start walking through some of the steepest thickest stuff you could imagine.  We used to make fun of them but opening day this year whacked a nice 5x6 and last year they nailed a huge buck.  Its like pheasant hunting for Muleys!  Hunting will improve when the weather comes in.

We hunt fairly low in the Teanaway, and for the first time ever we saw wolf tracks.   Kind of surreal really, but I'm sure they were wolf because they were huge and no way was there a huge dog walking up all of the draws, swales and gullies that these tracks were in...... unless it was really lost.

I saw no deer....

I drew a teanaway bull tag for late December so I thought I would call and talk to the biologist for the area and ask about the wolfs. He said as far as they can tell, the wolfs are only going after the deer because there's not enough of them to start targeting the elk. So if the deer numbers are down now, just wait till there's more and they start going after the elk.
