Great day!  I got my new bow all set up and ready to hunt and also made a trip to Wholesale Sports and the feed store, came home to 14 elk and 6 deer in the pasture.  What made it better was the fact that I didn't have to fight the pumkin patch crowds at Vail.  :chuckle:

:yeah:
I hunt the early season (Archery) for Elk, late season for deer.
But...
I was cutting firewood at my house and bringing down a few maples for next years wood.
I am getting a little p.o.ed at all the damage the deer on my property are doing to my apple and cherry trees  :bash:
wish late season archery was open in my unit (501) I would get some revenge.

I only spent the morning and afternoon in my hunting area today, seen lots of does, no bucks and only heard a few distant shots. But the crazy thing is I only seen half the hunters as previous years on opening day , not sure why but it i'm thinking it could be because of the discover pass  :dunno:

Have not hunted opening day for years same with the trout season not worth the hassle will hit it next week or week after no rush like to find a quiet place mid week if I can nothing better than bird doggin for all the road hunters during the weekend  :) hunted Little Naches one year opening day of Elk and came out of the brush at the bottom of a draw and at least 8 pickups full of pumpkins were glassing me last time I did that  :yike:

I have hardly seen anyone else with a discover pass.. I feel like Im one of the dumb few who actually got one. I have been looking at every truck recently to see who has one.. Not many. Hmm. I got one as soon as I heard about it. I spent about 8hrs in the woods today and saw nothing. Just other hunters, and some good sign. The first 3hrs I could only see like 30ft because of the fog. Fog didnt lift until 930. When it did lift I could see the orange glow of a hunter on the next hill about 100yds away.. =(

Too nice out weatherwise and too many people for me to really want to go after them.  Went to my normal access spot and the parking lot was overflowing.  Went to plan B, same story.  Plan C, again.  But it was sunny, no rain in the forecast, a saturday, and the national park had three of their major roads for hikers closed...try again tomorrow! :)

Couldn't find a B-tail, but the hunt did get interrupted when a small bear popped out :). If I can't find him tmr it will be off east of the mountains next wknd to look for the 2 point with an eyeguard that escaped the opening wknd orange fury.

As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

The weather sucked earlier to day. It was foggy and moist until about 1030. We didn't see the number of deer we have seen in the past but I think it was because of the crappy weather. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

For hunting up high it was perfect conditions. Clear and cold. 4" of snow. Hiked 3 hours in the dark to get to one of my favorite spots and my son got a 3 pt blacktail.

After getting home from football after midnight (got to love traveling to away games in a small town), the youngest and I slept in.  Listened to the scanner most of the day.  Sheriff spent a lot of time dealing with trespassers.  Went out for a late afternoon/evening hunt.  First spot we went there were several rigs.  No problem, the thing the got me spun up was the gut pile 10 yds off the road in plain sight.  Went the second spot there were about 6 rigs.  Headed towards the river.  Third spot wasn't too crowded.  Worked our way through the area but only saw a mulie doe.   We saw about 20 mulie does, no bucks and no WT.  This morning as I sit here on the laptop I've watched about 15 rigs on the move.

Opening day was pretty slow for us.  My Grandpa and I hunted all day and did not see a single deer.  My dad and brother hunted another spot and it was crowded so they left early but they saw 6 does.  Today we all went to a spot where no one else was hunting and my brother managed to get a spike down in the bottom of a big canyon.  Shot it at 8:00AM got it back to the truck at 1:00PM. on the way out we jumped a couple big bucks bedded in the reprod but my brother had my gun when I was dragging his deer and they were gone before I could get a shot.  They are not moving much hopefully we get some rain next weekend to get the blacktails moving a little more.

Beautiful weather. Spent the weekend splitting wood and a few hours chasing quail. Also helped a neighbor process a really nice buck taken off the LT Murray.  I have seen 4 really nice bucks taken off the LT this weekend. Deer pops finally rebounding it seems.

Opening day was great for the guys that I went hunting with. They went 6 for 6 opening morning. I hunt archery so I am waiting for late season. It seemed like the deer numbers were down and there weren't nearly as many mature bucks that we had seen last season.

Nice Wildbear!  Can't beat that.

Overall, numbers were down and so was quality.   For the most part I was missing a whole age class of bucks it seemed.  There were some obviously, but you have to remember I spend November looking for the biggest and the best.  I attributed some to weather, but later on that shouldn't have been a factor.   By the end I was concerned even to a point I thought they should shut down the late tags for a year or two, but then again that won't stop the wolves from eating and the natives from harvesting, so  :dunno:

I can say the number of mature whitetails in NE WA was down.. alot of cameras out between friends and there was a lack of 4 1/2+  yr old bucks on cams. Alot of 2 and 3 1/2 yr olds...next year should be good with a mild winter

Worst year I have seen in a while for Blacktails. Wasn't good for the mulies either. Was great for Idaho whitetail.
