How's everybodies luck in Winthrop?
« on: October 16, 2011, 12:23:07 PM »
Well here I am in the middle of a field without any deer in sight, saw one yesterday that was way out of my shooting range. Then did some moving and shaking by third creek saw two more bucks but couldn't verify if it was legal. Locals around here are perplexed about he deer numbers. Anybody have any idea why there are so few deer?

Looks like it, you guys and the muzzle loaders took out all the dumb ones, we finally got a look at a few two points up by third creek that might have had a third point on em but just couldn't get a good enough look to be sure it was legal.

Well all in all I had fun opening weekend for my first time deer hunting. I guess I need to do some more research on which areas produce the most deer and what their daily habits are. I'm looking forward to a new hobby that I will continue to get better and be able to pass down to me kids.... When I have them lol. Well hope everybody had better luck/skills than we did.

I just got back from hunting around Twisp/Winthrop, where we hunt every year. In our spots where we normally see 20-30 deer a day, we were only seeing 3-4. Everyone I talked to, including our local friends, say that they haven't been seeing nearly the amount of deer this year. I also noticed that the majority of the does I saw had no fawns. I heard that there has been an influx of coyotes, was thinking that the predators are just wiping out all of the fawns. Does anyone else have any ideas? Did anyone have much success in the Methow Valley this year?

I have seen wolves up there in the past, but am trying real hard to hope that they haven't already had this drastic of an affect on the deer population. Last year saw quite a few, but still not the amount we used to see, but this year was by far the worst. I'm going to hope it is just the moon cycle and the hot sunny days, but that definitely doesn't tell me why less than half the does I saw had no yearlings, especially when they usually always have twins.

I had the same experience, i've hunted there plenty in the past and have gone 3 for 4 on the same hillside that I've been hunting in years past, and didn't even see any does there. Hardly any fresh sign as well.

Talked to a local hunter that was actually born and raised in Twisp, and he said the deer number are completely down and he blames the wolves, but I asked him if he has ever seen a wolf and he said no, so I don't know what to think  :dunno: He actually said he is going to Montana to hunt it's so bad.

hate to tell you guys that I have been preaching this for a year or two, and especially this year.  It is more than the wolves. but......    I'm not an alarmist.  I tell you what I have seen.   I probably have logged more miles in the Mehtow than the average Blok.   I get my deer every year and I will post pics of those I take this fall, because I generally know where to find them.  The population is way down.  Don't let them fool you.  HELL even the big fields outside of town have WAY LESS animals. LOL
