4 for 6 in Idaho story added and finally some pics
« on: October 17, 2011, 09:44:25 AM »
Got back from our Idaho deer hunt late Saturday night and back to work now.  :bash: We were able to fill 4 out of our 6 deer tags and the two unfilled at least got a shot at a buck. We only were able to get 2 and 3 points but it is meat in the freezer. I will update tonight with stories and a few pictures.

We just returned from a week long hunt in Idaho for mule deer. The hunt started out pretty tough and we weren't seeing nearly as many deer as I had hoped. We arrived on Saturday night and opening day was Monday so we spent all day Sunday scouting. We saw 6 deer total including a 3x2 and a spike. It was good to at least see a few deer but I had expected to see more. One of the guys who is a member on here was about to fill his tag about an hour and a half into the season. I will let him tell the story if he would like. The next deer taken wasn't until Thursday morning and that was mine. We had split up into pairs covering a few different draws each. I had hiked way back up this draw when one of the guys got on the horn and asked if anyone was back by the trucks because he was watching a few deer feed right by them. I was at least a mile from the truck but I responded that I was on my way. I humped it down off the hill and worked my way back down towards where he had seen the deer. He was watching them as I worked my way closer and lucky for me, they were heading my way so I worked my way up a different draw to try and cut them off. I had just started up the draw when I spotted a doe on the opposite side about 50 yards away. I sat down and verified that it was a doe and ended up watching 5 other deer follow her up the hill and all were does and yearlings. I sat there thinking where the buck could have went because the guy who had spotted them could have sworn he saw horns. I sat there watching them work there way up the hill when I caught movement up higher and to my right. I pulled up and saw two more does standing there and then a buck stepped out. It didn't take long for me to decide that I was going to take him. One shot at 185 yards and I saw him jump straight up in the air. I was confident he was hit hard and felt even better when I only saw two deer heading off up the hill. I got back on the horn and told the guys deer down. I went up the hill, which was a lot steeper then it first looked, to look for the buck. I got closer and closer to where I marked him and didn't see any deer in the sage brush. I started getting nervous and wondering if I actually missed when I spotted a leg sticking out from under a juniper tree. He had tumbled about 10 feet and ended up tangled in the tree. I was pretty stoked to have a deer and know that my freezer was going to be full. He wasn't the good buck I had set out for but he will eat well!

The highlight of the trip had to be the following night, the last night of our hunt when I was able to spot two bucks from about a mile away, put a two hour stalk on and get my buddy his first shot at a deer. He ended up missing after all that work and a serious case of buck fever but I kept reminded him to keep his head up. He took it all in stride and was able to reflect on how cool it was to be out in the hills chasing around mulies. Luckily, one of our other guys was able to get one of the bucks about a half mile away as they made their escape. He was one happy camper and just his excitement and joy made the whole trip worth while. Now the question is, where do we go next year?  :chuckle:
