My son (11 at the time) and I shot a buck about 25 yards away, then had some turkey taking pot shots at us from 350 yards.  He unloaded his gun at the buck, & we had bullets and rocks flying all around us.  The buck was hurt bad by our shot, so soon as the guy ran out of shells I ran over there and dumped him for good.  Then the guy had the balls to truck down the hill to try to claim the buck.  By then, I had it gutted & tagged.

There are all kinds of nut cases out there.  I got held at gunpoint by a rifle hunter over a 4pt buck that I found laying in the woods, ungutted.  I gutted the buck out, since nobody showed up for 2 hours.  I guess the guys wife shot it and didn't know what to do, so she left it in the woods.  So the guy accused me of stealing last year's buck and the year before that.  Stuck his loaded 7mm in my gut and made me empty my pants.  I didn't even want the damn buck.  Told him to take it.  Congrats, nutcase!

All that is why I switched to black powder or stick to the highest hills.  Seems like the terrain deters guys like that.  Most guys I meet up in the rocky hills are pretty darned good men.

Sorry to hear about your buck, but you did the right thing.

This is why I really don't hunt anymore, and why I don't like taking my kids out. I may go out once or twice a year, but as soon as others show up I'm gone. I've had valve stems cut off of my tires, guns pointed at me, physical threats, and bullets hitting the trees around me. And all this took place over the course of my first 2 elk seasons. And it's not just the modern firearm guys. I have bow hunting buddies who have run into the same type of people.

You did the right thing by walking away. Arguing with people like that is pointless. You may as well try to argue with a child. Sure you can win the argument, but you haven't changed the way they think. People like this are just damaged goods. Like most people of below average intelligence, they will eventually meet somebody dumber than themselves and they will all battle it out like a bunch of animals. Let natural selection take it's course and these morons will eventually be dealt with by a group of even bigger morons. And then the cycle will continue..... :bash:

ATVs have nothing to do with this story. It's the guys who stole the deer and that's it.
This is true only if they were allowed to be back there on the quads. Not everyone is as responsible as you are. Guys who intentionally go into closed areas have already proven that they feel like they're exempt from the rules. It shows that they have a history of poor decision making. They are the same as the shooters who pop shots at every road sign or no shooting sign that they pass. They give everyone in their sport a bad name.

Wow that's all I can say. I'm sorry about your luck.  If someone shoots at me and especially my son that man would have taken a round through the brain housing group.  I have a history of returning accurate fire on those who shoot at me or my friends.  :chuckle:

As for the guy who accused you of stealing the buck. Not sure what I would have done after took the gun from my gut.  It would have depended on if he pulled a weapon on me while I was pummeling his face. If he took it like a man he'd leave with some busted ribs. If he pulled a gun well we all gotta go sometime.   :chuckle:

And yes I realize my above post makes me sound like a chest thumper. But... There is one thing I have 0 tolerance for. Being shot at and/or having a gun pulled on you.

You shot and they shot, maybe they are somewhere talking about a guy who tried to steal thier deer? Could it have been an honnest mistake? Sounds like they were jerks for hunting right by you tho. I think you did right, I would never die or kill over a deer. As for vandalizing the cars, you would be letting the creeps turn you into a creep. I would not do that either.

If my son and I have to take cover because of bullets hitting around us at that point its not about a deer its about self defense.

If another person pulls a gun on me its no longer about the deer its about selfdefens

Your right killing someone over a deer is stupid. But killng in self defense is not.

Same thing happened to a buddy of mine several seasons ago out near Harrington.  Nice big 4 x 4 with eye-guards (although it was a muley-whitey hybrid, so maybe it was a 5 x 5, or a 5 x 4 with an eye-guard ... i digress ...).  Buddy shot it and dropped him, he stood up and stumbled around a rock outcropping, soon as he did another shot rang out.  We got up to the deer and there was one hole .... entrance wound on its right side, exit wound on its left (the deer was standing broadside when he shot, right side was what we were looking at).  Group of guys hollering at us from its left and running towards us saying to get away from the deer they just shot.  We explain there is no way that they shot this deer and showed them the entrance and exit wounds and asked how they shot it on the right side when they were on its left side.  They had no answer, and it basically turned into a stare down.  Had one person flinched I think it would have turned into the O.K. Corral.  We let them have the buck after some heated words.  Wasn't worth dying over.

They hauled it out on a game cart, tossed it in the bed of their truck, then went back to hunting.  Didn't gut it at all.  That afternoon when they showed up back at their truck the game warden that was waiting for them wasn't very friendly with them and they weren't very happy with the tickets they received.

Thats BS... Those greedy dip*censored*s .... thats the only thing about hunting around other people ....I always avoid the crowd ....someone shows up where I am headed and act like they are going to I will just pack my sheet and go else where ...Thats just me ....another thing is if the animal is close enough to shoot it in the neck or on top of the shoulder , do it and you will not have that problem again  :twocents:

I'm a rook and I'm glad I decided to bow hunt ....... Sorry to hear that man, I don't understand some people.
You handled it better than I would have. At the minimum they would of been buying new tires.
LMAO

It happens when bowhunting too-- My hubby's first and only elk he got with a bow ... a coupla guys with a casually displayed pistol decided that  they were gonna take it... I'm glad my husband was wise but boy that  pisses ya off. It was freakin bow season.

ATVs have nothing to do with this story. It's the guys who stole the deer and that's it.

Sure it does, and the reason I asked if they were legal to be in there with ATV's, is that I don't see how he could turn those guys into law enforcement for "stealing" his deer. Where's the proof? It's his word against theirs. I don't think a game warden would be able to do anything, even if he had got license plate numbers and called it in. However, he could have turned them in for being behind a locked gate on ATV's. Very few areas here on the westside is it legal to go around gates on ATV's.
