"the big can" calling for blacktail question
« on: October 24, 2011, 01:56:08 PM »
Seeing better than usual results on the forum from people using "The Can" on blacktail.  Wondering what your calling sequence is for this.  Is it a bleat or 2 and wait 5 minutes?  over and over hitting it hard?  How are you using it and what results are you geting?

I used mine many times over the past weekend, once in the presence of deer (all I could see were does).  It had no effect whatsoever, they didn't even look up.  It didn't spook them, which is good I suppose.  I found myself using it when I snapped a twig, or made some noise as I still hunted, but again, it had no visible effect.
Nothing witty here.... move along.

Double J, I have found that the Can is too loud for blacktails, at least if you are tipping it over. I have had the best results when I blow through the small thumb hole on the bottom when the weather is calm and there is no wind. On a windy blacktail day, I will tip it over as the louder tone will help cut the wind a little better. I always use doe estrus scent when calling and it rarely doesn't produce results at least a few times during the season.

What's the sequence you use?

I have used the Great Big Can for over a decade. I only use it if I don't get a deer in the general season. During the four days of the Western Washington Late Buck Season however; IT IS DEADLY AND PRODUCES EXCELLENT RESULTS!

Used it tonight.  Got something in to about 30 yards.  It wouldn't clear the brush and when I woke up my 7 year old to get ready for the shot, he made a TON of noise.  Whatever was in the brush never showed.  So goes hunting with a 7 year old.
