little one not going so good..
« on: October 25, 2011, 03:00:33 PM »
Today my 8 month red lab Remmy got diagnosed with Parvo. apprently when we bought her (not from a AKC breeder) she got her shots and she did but failed to get her second phases of the shot.. it happened staurday night when she wouldnt eat adn threw up, and started to get a little larthargic. we took her back to my girlfriends house and she stil was acting like that and finally ate a little bit, sunday came and she got a little worse, still not eating much, slow not energetic threw up. monday came she was still about the same and my girlfriend decided to take her to the vet. She explained to the vet that she had her shots and yada yada so they said well keep her overnight to see if anything changed. Well today we went back to check on her and bring some more food and she looked like a wreck... she looked as if she lost 15 pounds  not moving so hot, still wasnt eating and shedding like crazy.. when we got there i said could you guys also test for Parvo, the vet kinda shruged it off and insisted if she had already got the shots she fine and i insisted again, same kinda lame ass answer, so this tested my patients pretty bad and got a little mouthy with her and then the process began.. they swabed her went back into the room and ran it 30 mins came back out and called us into the "paitent room" and the vet i went off on turned red and announced our little one had parvo... I feel relifed i went with my girlfriend and pushed the fact to test because if i hadn't there probably wouldnt be a good outcoming hopefully to come... i called back 45 mins later to check if they hooked her up to fluids and they had...Now i just pray for the best, nothing to do but wait.. i feel horrible but a slight sense of hope since she got tested fairly early, she isnt super young and still able to walk.. the vet said if the dog cant move its bad news but she could still wag her tail when she saw me walk threw the door and i took her out for a little walk.. I hope all goes well this is pretty rough for me, i can deal with pretty heart wrenching situations, but this one might be one of the toughest..

sorry to hear that man,.. i have a gsp pup die of parvo,..  hard to watch,... hope to pup makes it through...

on a side not,.. no matter of the outcome of this,...  clean out overthing and everywhere your dog was aound,.   if she stays in a kennel,.. bleach out the whole thing.  throw away or burn all the pups toys and food bowls,.. clean all your guyses shoes.  and make sure any friends or relatives with pups avoid your place till there pups get vacinated..

parvo can stick around for a looong time.  i think up to 10 months.  :yike:  your pup could've been exposed to parvo in alot of places and in many ways,.. the mailman could've brougght it to your house from another house with a dog,..

parks,.. ecpecially dog park should always be avoided with young pups.

good luck man,  hope for the best.

The thing is my dogs never leave my house, no other dogs come near my house i live up in the woods, my girlfriend lives in a 250 arce farm and her dad makes damn sure the only animals running around his property are his own.. and she NEVER strays far from the pourch, my best guess is that i had to of drug it into there house from her family from her shoes or clothing or from me, no other dogs besides mine or theres set foot in our houses  :dunno:. Shes already started to disinfect everything and ill be doing the same at mine.

Thank you all for the moral support i'll keep posting updates.

my vet in moses is awesome, he told me keeping them over night is just ripping people off, gave us some pills for the parvo and pills to keep her from throwing up, 2 days later she was bouncing off the walls and she was in bad shape!! puking blood...diarrea, the neighbors dog got it a few days after and i told them about our vet they went in and same thing both dogs came out perfectly fine cost us both about $145 for the meds, the parvo test, and the office visit

Really sorry to hear. I had a cocker that got parvo, and my buddies dog and its sibling all about the same time. All survived. They all looked like hell, and we were sure the one pup was going to die. He started walking and got his muzzle in a fence and kept trying to walk. I put him in a closet and expected him to be dead by morning. He was fine and ran right outside. My cocker got stolen, so I bought a black lab. A week later he got parvo and I had to put him down. That was tough. The one thing in common....the park behind our house......

Called the vet this morning, she said she looks like she improving a lot. She only threw up once this morning but no diarrhea which is good. There gonna try to feed her today and slowly discontinue over the next couple day IV's. Big relief.

At what age did you get this pup?Did you take this pup to the vet for shot's? pups are to be vaccinated at 6,8 and 12-16 weeks,2 puppy shots and a booster. The first shot is mostly consumed by the mothers milk antibodies(which is why a female should be vaccinated current prior to breeding). The second series builds immunnity more, and the booster gets them inocculated for the first year,a booster is required every 3 years after that.Your pup should have had at least 3 series of shots prior to coming down with the funk.

I would have to ask my girlfriend i think 2 month 2 weeks old? Well today we tried to figure out the shot thing and we put it all together she did acutally have all her shots on time and everything (was left out of the loop when she was vaccinated with everything, yes taken to the vet). My guess is yes the mother antibodies could of cancled it out or something to be honest im stumped  :dunno:.

Called again today the vet tech said she hasnt eaten but hasnt thrown up or diarreha, i think why she didnt eat is cause the hard food could upset her stomach though. So tomorrow i think were gonna bring her some chicken and rice. The vet reccommened some food that was apparently "smells so good a human would wanna eat it" some medicated food for situations like this. As of right now shes on another fluid to pump nutrients in her.

3dvapor- already did. She's for now on going to the vet i take me other dogs, nicest lady in the world does a great job.

Better news: She didnt throw up or poop all night all day yesterday or today shes stronger today they said we can take her home . NOt eating but i think when shes home shell be more comfortable and wanna eat something. Pickin her up some new toys and food. I think were gonna slowly start with some easy yogurts and chicken and rice, carrots (LOVES carrot) and apple( adores apples). idk how shell act with the food being at home but i hope shell eat. Anyone have suggestions for food/ perusading her to eat?

Again thanks for the thoughts and support guys. :hello:

Glad your pup is doing better!!!! I got my Springer from a well known trainer / vet. He said not to take the pup out of our yard until 2 weeks after the last vaccine. When I took him in to the Vet, he was in my lap and not on the floor. Never touched the Vet floor.

I am always shocked to see people out and about with little puppies. I am sure most turn out just fine. But better to be safe than sorry.

Hope all turns out well!!!!

Brought her home actin her normal self . As soon as she walked outside and we greeted her she just about pulled over one of the vet techs! Soon as we got into the truck held out a handful of food to see if she would eat, gobbled it right up. Fed her little bit of ut up turkey slices mixed into her dry food ate it all. she aint at 100% but definitly 90+. lost a lot of weight but shes doing great. HUGE relief im so thankful shes gonna be ok. :)

Again thank you all for the support and thoughts!
