I got a bear back in September of 2000 in the Quilomene unit when I was with a friend scouting for his late Quilomene mule deer permit. It had just come out of the trees and was in the sagebrush headed downhill towards the river (middle of the day). We assumed it was going for water. I was definitely surprised to see it there.

Is this the bear you are referring to?  The guy was along to coyote hunt during myself and another guy's bow hunt on YTC and was lucky enough to kill this monster bear.
(sorry about the bad cell phone pic)

I think it has a lot to do with the lack of pressure. Not many people expect to see bears in the sage brush so they have a tendency to get old, and big. I wouldn't imagine that it has to do with food, unless they come out of hibernation in the winter to chase the deer and elk that winter in the sagebrush. I know of an area that has a large bear in Kittitas county, unfortunately it appears to be a sow, so I will not shoot her until I can be 100% sure it is a boar.
