Shoot it at the pattern board. See what your gun tells you.

I always liked 1 ounce loads when shooting at 16 yards, only because of the lighter recoil and there was no problem breaking birds. But then I always used a full choke too. I agree that it would be best to pattern your gun at the distance you're shooting and see what the patterns look like.

I have always used 1 1/8 #8s for 16 yard and handicap out to 25 yards, then I switch to 1 1/8 #7 1/2s.  For doubles I use 1 1/8 #9 for the first shot then a 1 1/8 #8s for the second. That was when I was shooting 5-600 rounds a month at practice and then another 4-500 rounds a month shooting registered targets. Now I only shoot 2-400 rounds a month at sporting clays; that is when its not bird hunting season.  :twocents:

1 oz is the heaviest that I shoot for any clay game.  I switched over from 1 1/8 about a year ago and my scores increased.

For the 16y, 7/8 oz of #8 over 18g of Clays or Clay Dot works great.

when i was shooting competitively i always ran 1 1/8 oz right around the 1250fps mark for shoots, light modified choke for singles and modified for handicap and mod over light mod for doubles (always shot bottom barrel first).

for practice id load 1 oz loads, i never noticed a difference in recoil between the 1 1/8 and 1 oz loads(my reloads that is) unless i was shooting some factory loaded handicap shell that was going max dram.

the difference in pellet count between 1 oz and 1 1/8 oz is like a few dozen for singles this isnt really gonna bump your scores by much you may pick up an extra target or two but at 16 yds if youre off youre off. if youre looking to get better practice and boost your scores shoot 7/8 oz with the tightest choke you got then at a shoot or after a while shoot a heavier load with a wider choke.

if youre in the game for fun and to shoot more go with a 7/8 or 1 oz around 1150 or 1200 it will help stretch shot and powder but if youre in the game to go to ATA or PITA shoots and try to win money or buckles id run 1 1/8 loads at a minimum of 1200fps, most other shooters will so why handicap yourself intentionally by using a lighter load.

when i was coming up in the ATA world i asked this exact question to an older gent that became my shooting mentor and is a WA St ATA hall of fame memeber his answer was "we're in this game to win money, buckles and handicap yards why the hell would you want to handicap yourself by shooting lighter slower loads?"

:yeah: I agree with that! My Father who is very well known in the Trap world shot 1oz at 16's for a while and broke many good scores. He said he could not tell a difference. I know he liked the 1 1/8oz for handy cap, but would shoot just as well with the 1oz from the 27. Me, I load 1 1/8 of #8's or #7 1/2. That is where I cant tell a difference, is between those two shot sizes. My scores do not change. After all this, I like the 1 1/8oz loads, for the same reason given in the above quote.
