Some west side elk
« on: July 08, 2008, 08:45:59 PM »
I've got a couple places I've been scouting out after seeing some good traffic last year. Before last year, I was never a serious elk hunter, but now I've got elk fever and I've been scouting out some crazy holes where few people go. Anyways, I've had one camera out for about a month now (moultrie I40 -- pics below), and a 2nd camera in about 5 miles for two weeks. Went and checked the far one (D40) and it was laying in the mud at the base of the tree. Guess I tightened it too much and the plastic broke two days after I put it up. Kinda sux to walk 10 miles and get no pics ;)

And here's the only mature bull thus far, and it took a very careful examination in Photoshop to realize it. I'm curious what anyone else thinks about the size of this guy... Gonna be a 5-pt or 6-pt maybe? Either way, I know he'll be darn near impossible to find this hunting season:

That will add a few degrees to your elk fever.

Hey, do I know you? Nice pics!
Yes sir. You should've made your nickname Hohroadhunter though!  :chuckle: Just kiddin!

Re: tree stand. Good idea but they only come through about once a week so you'd be waiting a while! Over about 4 months I only got pics of about 5 or 6 bulls there.

fc2038 - no road, that's a stream. Would be funny if it was that close to a road though.

My cams are at 5000 feet now, gonna have to get a snowmobile or leave em til Spring.  :bash:

Great pics! I love how clear they are, awesome animals too!

Are you really using a D40 (Nikon), or is that a model for an actual trail cam?

Thanks! Not a Nikon D40, I meant the Moultrie D40 -- it's their cheapest model, and I wasn't very happy with it (shutter took too long to fire). The pictures I posted were from the Moultrie I40, the infrared model is a little better... I don't think I'd leave a Nikon D40 out in the woods for very long, but it would take nice pics if there was a way to set it up with a motion sensor!

I figured it wasn't a Nikon model, but I had to check. Don't have a trail cam yet, but I'm thinking I met get one to set up on my parent's property. I'll have to keep that I40 in mind, the pics look great!
