Markworth St. Forest report
« on: October 28, 2011, 01:00:13 PM »
Hunted Markworth over the last few days.  Walked in about five miles, sunrise til dark, glassing clearcuts and moving through the timber.  Saw some deer tracks, droppings, and lots of bear sign.  Maybe they're farther in.

Any thoughts?  I haven't seen much by way of other hunters.

Ive also hunted the heck out of mackworth this season. Out of 6 days, ive seen deer one day (last sat), saw 6 does. Very slow in there this year. My brother in law nailed a decent spike opening morning, but i, personally havent heard of anything else coming out of there this year. Lots of sign , just not seeing as many animals as previous years. :dunno:

I scouted in there some this summer and found what I thought would be a good spot but haven't hunted it at all. There seemed to be a heck of a lot of fresh sign over the summer.
Are you guys seeing any grouse?

Havent seen any grouse in there this year. I mainly stick to one area west of the mainline, lots of logging trucks up on the mainline right now. I also ran into another hunter who has seen 2 couger since the opener, but he didnt have a tag :bash:

Ive seen two grouse so far in about 5 days of scouting this fall, usually see more. As far as deer go, I havent seen as much sign as I did last year at this time. I stay west of the mainline too but you dont have to walk far to find em. Its a lot easier for late muzzy because all the leaves are off the trees so you can see a lot better. Ususally average about 6 deer per day scouting and hunting but Ive probably seen 6 deer total this fall.

Well, I managed to flush a decent forkhorn out there this morn. Flushed it right to another hunter though who smacked it. Felt good because it was a young kid and his first deer. Also, it was right on the rear of a doe, so it seems the rut may be starting here as well.

I park on Stossel, walk in from there.  Saw a few does taking a mid-day break on a ridge.  But no bucks.  Maybe go out tomorrow.
