Entiat Late Rifle Hunt
« on: October 29, 2011, 10:08:38 AM »
Looking for help or suggestions with my late hunt in the Entiat Unit. I have not had time to scout the unit and have never hunted it before so have no idea what I am getting into other than it is steep and I am excited. I am leaving for my hunt on Sunday the 6th and staying in Pateros so the first question is how far am I away from my hunting area? I appreciate the help.

Depending on where you are hunting I would say around an hour drive from Pateros.  Do lots and lots of glassing and hope for snow to push the big boys in.

I live and hunt in that area.  First, you drew a prime tag so don't just shoot the first decent buck you see.  With a little work, luck, and some cold, nasty weather you should be able to harvest a really nice buck.  As for areas, Slide Ridge-Johnson Creek-Mud Creek-Oklahoma Gulch are all good areas to start with.  Hopefully we get some snow and the big bucks will be moving down.  Good luck.

Great tag and it should be a great hunt.  Hope for snow.  You will see lots of 22" 4x4's.  If you hold out you can kill a 170+ buck.  Even if there is no snow you will still see lots of bucks.

Had the tag last year.  Glass, glass and glass some more.  Don't shoot the 1st buck you see and pray for weather.  Hope you are in shape as it is some pretty big country.  If you don't have a topo of the area or a map get one.  When you are up high glassing you might see a buck on another ridge, you'll need a map to figure out how to get over to it. (especially if you haven't scouted it)  We had a blast on this hunt.  good luck and be sure to come back on this forum with pics!

Snowmobile would come in handy. Friend of mine had the tag last year and killed a monster. Be picky and wait for the big boys to migrate down.

If you haven't seen alot of big deer or shot a couple above 150 before don't even think about putting your finger inside the trigger guard until the 16th or the 17th.  By then you should have a good idea of what a big deer there looks like.  Spend the first week learning  the area and getting the feel for what big deer look like, then when you see one that really gets your heart racing BOOM goes the dynamite.  Good luck and have a blast that is a great tag and you don't want it to end on the first couple of days.

Like others have said, this is a great tag to have.  If you get some snow in there it is a blast, even if the snow isn't there you will see alot of deer with the rut in full swing.  Glass, glass glass, pick the ridges apart, I have seen alot of deer in the Potato creek and mud creek areas.  Look at some topo maps and look for natural funnel areas and you will do well.  Good luck and be safe up there, bring chains!

Have fun! I had the tag last year too. Saw lots and lots of bucks. I hunted the later half of the season. Ran into Cascade and a couple of his buddies too. Lots of people around there that time of the year. Not just tag holders. Looky lu's, photo guys and gals and wood cutters. I killed a cool buck, by no means a monster but my best muley so far. Here's a little vid. Cross your fingers for nasty weather! It was pretty blue bird while I was up there. I had just spent six days in Oregon chasing deer so I didn't get a chance to hunt as long as I would have liked but remember its YOUR deer. As long as you are happy and have fun that's all that matters! Keep us posted!!

Start high and hope for weather. There are a lot of very nice bucks in the unit, so glass a bunch and get the big one.

Thanks to all for the help and advice for this great hunt. I had a great few days of hunting and got some great video of the buck I shot along with others during the week. I passed on this guy 2 days in a row and after getting some very good video and pics while alive I thought it was time to put him on the wall. The Enitiat tag is definatley the tag to have :)

Not sure about a full story but we had the best 3 days of deer hunting I have ever had. I passed on several nice bucks and the one I ended up with I passed on twice. My hunting party and freinds gave me a bad time for passing on this guy after watching the video and seeing his mass. We hunted in the area all day that I got the video the day before and did not see the deer we named Chumba. After a full day of pics and video on the way out right at dark my Buddy saw what he thought was a no brainer in a 35+ inch buck after looking at him I knew he was the buck from the day before and took him. He was about 300 yards straight up from us and after he went down he rolled 150 of the 300 yards straight to us. I will try to get some video and a few more pics on the sight. Thanks Again to All for the Help!!!!!!!! 2011 was good to me as I will also attach a pic of the Bull I got.

Couple that with the elk, and you've got a full freezer along with a bunch of great hunting memories.

I really want to draw that tag someday...  :)
