The perils of hunting high country blacktails
« on: October 29, 2011, 12:01:22 PM »
I glass a bedded buck on the ridgeline a good 800-900 yds out. I won't be able to see the buck until I'm about 80 yds. All goes well and as I set up for the shot he stands up. Perfect. 180 grs tear through his lungs and far shoulder. Should've dropped him in his tracks. But noooooo. He starts thrashing and tumbles off the ridge and flops up against a tree. Whew! OH NO! Tries to get up, flops past the tree and starts into a horrible tumble. Easily 1,000 yds down!

First pic is from down the avalanche chute about 300 yds already.

He went farther around the corners than you can see.

Another 300 yds down. Found blood and hair a good 12-15 ft up the side of the "luge" as he banked around corners. It was really sketchy going down after him.

Still going, again, farther than you can see.

Well, he WAS a 4x3. Now a 4x1! :chuckle: I would have been disgusted had it been a big buck.

Nice looking buck 3nails.  That spot looks real familiaer.  Buddy shot a nice 3 point up there last weekend.

So it's your truck I've been seeing up there!  Sounds like a lot of bucks have come off that hillside this year.  Great buck!  I've packed game through those chutes before, it can be tough just to get to them, let alone get them out of there!

Great job!

I figured you'd chime in Shane..  We oughta do a "Meet and Greet" one of these days and get to know some of the other Whatcom County guys outside of Lynden.   Done threadjacking 3nails.  Again, nice high country buck.

Awesome!  Love that area, and those are some nasty chutes to pack out of!

No. I was more concerned with getting down alive. I didn't know yet he had busted off and it could have flipped anywhere. No way was I going to climb back up looking for it. :chuckle: Maybe if it was a lot bigger buck.
