Leupold VX-II in a 3-9x40 for $299. Price will be the same no matter where you buy, as apparently Leupold forces all retailers to sell that scope at that price. Great scope for the money.

I agree that the VXII is a great choice. I might go with a 4x12x40 or even 50 obj if it would fit on the rifle.

The eye relief on the VXII is good.

What do you do with the rifle? Where, how and what do you hunt? big game? open country, brush and timber? target?
Might make it easier to give advice!!

A lot will depend on your price range too.  Overall hard to beat a 3x9 with a 40mm obj.  Here are some suggestions:

-Bushnell Elite series
-Sightron
-Zeiss Conquest

I have Burris fullfield 3-9x40 on my 30-06.  I've been very happy with it.

That's a great scope for the price. Good choice. I've got that same scope on my Weatherby 30-06. You should just go ahead and get new mounts. The Talley Lightweights are the ones I like. Simple and strong, and easy to install:

bob...quick question on those tally lw's...
do you is a medium height ring in those the same height or close enough to the medium height of say weaver rings or leupy rings? i ask because they don't use a base...attaching directly to the rifle, at least thats the way i am reading it.
i like the idea of putting those on my rifle...
thanks.

If you use a medium height in other rings, with the Talleys you might get away with using the low. I believe the lows are very close to medium in Leupold rings.

What size is the objective on your scope?

40mm,, but i am looking at a 44mm scope for my 10/22 and the 40mm thats on it now currently has about 1/8" clearance over the rear sight with it folded down in leupold medium rings and i am going to a bull barrel. pretty sure i will need a taller ring with a 44mm and a .920 barrel.
