Best way to fix waders???
« on: November 02, 2011, 12:04:48 PM »
Never had a rip in my waders before....so not sure what to do, buying a new pair is not in the budget right now so I need to repair them ... I was wading and trippied on some basalt rocks and hit my shin...so the tear is 3 inches above the rubber boot part...its a u shaped cut a little smaller than a dime... I have heard of people using shoe-goo or similar products, I just am not certain on what the best procedure is... any help is greatly appreciated so that i can get back out there with more than just gorilla tape on there... nothin worse than a wet sock...(well there is...but you know what I mean)  ....Thanx

I use raft patches you can get at wholesale sports or the like.

Shoe-Goo works well.  There's a product called Aquaseal(I think) that works good too.

Are they neoprene or breathables?

Try Plasti-Dip.  The kind you dip tool handles in.  Turn your waders inside out and paint it on and let it dry.  This works really well on breathables that are starting to get older and the seams are starting to open up.  Paint the seams with Plasti-Dip and they are good to go for another season.

I have only done this to cheaper Hodgmans.  They started to leak on season three so I did this fix.  I made it two more years without leaking.  Give it a try.

yeah they are neoprene ...5mm redhead brand ..... if I use the shoo-goo type stuff do I  just smear it on the cut edges and then like an inch around the hole on the inside and on the outside???   I dont need like a piece of fabric or anything right???

Ultra-black silicone sealer.

with neos just squirt some shoe goo on the inside push outside down on it. let it kick then aply it to the outside just along tear. Let it dry. then put another layer over that that covers it on both sides, and kinda rub it in the the outside layer. It is ugly but wont leak'

breathables.... Aqua seal is the only way to go  :twocents:

aquaseal works great for all kinds of wader repair(including holes in the rubber boots).

i have heard good things about plasti-dip but never tried it.  supposedly it makes a great quick fix if you don't have the time to let aquaseal or shoe goo cure.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

Totally agree with the above.  BUT!!!

If you are stressing the rip you might want to run some thread (Sew it) with 3 to 5 stiches but make sure you have glue between the neoprene then do as the folks have stated.  The stiches will help keep it together under stress

i had a dime sized hole in my boot last year and got a boat patch kit. i filled the hole as best i could with shoe goo then added the patch to the outside. let it dry and did the same for the inside. i coated both outside and inside edges with shoe goo as well (might have been over kill but i hate wet feet) only problem was it was baby blue but that didnt matter to me

good news...the shoe goo held like a charm, i filled the gap from the inside, spread it out and then put a piece of fabric saturated with goo on it and then smeared some on the front side in concentric circles and let it dry... went hunting on Saturday in the crazy wind and we got 4 limits of ducks, mostly divers but it held up great in the water thus far....thanx for the help guys
