How Do I Install a Tru Glo Fiber Bead? HELP?
« on: November 02, 2011, 04:30:18 PM »
Hey guys. I want to change the bead on my shotgun to one of the Tur Glo Fiber Optic beads, I bought one of these dual color Fat Beads - http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=truglo+dual+color&gs_upl=1255l4660l0l6093l13l11l0l0l0l0l209l1041l8.2.1l11l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&biw=1280&bih=898&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=1643282379920110353&sa=X&ei=0NCxTu2tKqmZiAKA4ZAG&sqi=2&ved=0CFgQ8wIwBQ

I have to get the fiber optic out of the little mounting frame to install the screw thru the frame and into the shotgun rib - but I cant get the damn bead out of the mount and it doesnt have anything in the instructions. It just says "remove existing bead and select proper screw"  :bash: Is there some sort of trick or method to getting the fiber optic bead out without ruining it?

Also, I want to put one on my boys 870 but his bead is pressed in and I dont know how to get that one out in order to tap & install the new tru glo one??

I am all FUBAR'ed!!

I've never tried to take one out, but I think they slide out towards the back (buttstock) end.  They are most likely a tight fit, so they don't fall out.  Maybe clip forceps on it with some padding so you don't scratch it and tap the forceps ligtly with a small hammer to get it to slide out.  That's the way I'd attack it, anyway. Let us know how you do...  :twocents:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

Yeah its in there tight alright! I held the mount frame with needlenoses then pushed on the end of the fiber on the corner of a piece of wood but it wont budge. There is a red fiber tube inside a green one and the end of the red tube sticks out slightly past the end of the green so when you push on it, you are pushing on the red. I think I felt the red tube move a little and come loose from the green tube ever so slightly and I dont want it to come apart but if it does I guess I could just glue the red one back into the green.

I emailed TruGlo a few days ago and they said they'll get back to me within 24hrs but nothing yet. Seems like a stupid setup to me!

The tube is symmetrical in that both ends look exactly the same and the ends are flush with the mount. So I would have to pinch the tube in the middle where it is exposed and try to tap it that way - is that what you mean?

Thanks for the help guys.

Is there some sort of trick or method to getting the fiber optic bead out without ruining it?

Maybe not 'without ruining it', I always used vice grips set as loose as possible to unscrew them.  I suppose you could cushon the vice grips with a small piece of rubber band.  I never really worried about the old bead, I've never gone back to factory beads after installing fiber.

Also, I want to put one on my boys 870 but his bead is pressed in and I dont know how to get that one out in order to tap & install the new tru glo one??

Pressed in should also be removable with vice grips.  Just clamp and twist while pulling.  You shouldn't worry about ruining this one, if it's pressed in, you'll never reuse it.

Thanks Hunter - I'll try that with the 870. But on the other one I am talking about how to get the fiber out of the mounting base so I can attach the mount base to the shotgun. I got the original metal bead to screw out out no problem with pliers.

So here are some pics to help explain. See how the bottom of the mount has a hole in it - its not like the ones that have a threaded post on the bottom. So you have to get the fiber out in order to screw the set screw thru the bottom of the mounting base and into the shotgun rib. Something so little & stupid and its got me stumped!

Oh geez!!!!!    :bash:   Ok... now I feel REALLY STUPID!! As I was looking at the pics I realized the hole in the base is threaded and the set screws are threaded completely, some with different sized threads on each end. Not with a slotted head like I assumed. So I am supposed to thread one end into the base and the other into the gun. SHEESH! WHAT A DORK! I couldnt see those threads in he base until I looked at the pics! Oh man I'm getting old! Thanks for the help guys. Geez I feel STUPID!

Thanks for the vid too P-man. I never thought to look on youtube, (man you can find anything on the net these days) I just went straight to my buds here!

Yep, put the base against something hard and unmovable with the opening for the fiber completely exposed.  Press on the fiber from the other side.  It should pop out.

Thats what I had been trying but not being to rough and was just about to go a postal and ram that sucker out! Glad I looked at the pics before I went & ruined it! I'm still shaking my head on how dumb I was.....
