Coyote hunting in any of these areas?
« on: October 20, 2011, 04:15:10 PM »
Tiger mountain, Cougar Mountain, Rattlesnake mountain, Squak Mountain.  I am also open to other suggestions of places within an hour or so of Renton Wa.  I'm not trying to steal anyones hot spots, to get that out of the way.  Just some general hunting grounds.  Any information on places to hunt coyote is HIGHLY appreciated as I am new to coyote hunting.

You probably don't need to go that far--coyotes have learned that where there's people, there's food!
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

I heard from a guy at sportsmans warehouse in lacey that near spokane is ridiculous with yotes, to the point that they are talking about hiring yote hunters to thin them out. Apparently the deer up there this year aren't very numerous.

There are coyotes everywhere. Have you thought about your question? Are you asking; where to go? How to call? what kind of terrain? what gun?what sound? How do I set up? We have heard this question many times.

Knowing coyotes live there is different than are they callable? are they paraniod or nocturnal? Is there a way to set up a shot? can you see them? some places hold a lot of coyotes but there is no way to set up to move them, shoot them and be safe??? Do you want to call low percentage places or high. somtimes the success has nothing to do with population but a lot to do with who called when and how long ago and did he kill any? or  have they ever been called?

1 learn to shoot
2 get a call or 5. learn to make them squeal.
3 watch the wind, hunt like any other animal!
4 find some coyotes and call them.
5 screw the whole thing up and kill nothing.
6 learn from it.
7 set up cross wind if you can
8 have a good back ground
9 stay out of the sun
10 do not move except yer eyes
11 scope it out BEFORE you call
12 kill the coyotes when they come, see #1.
13 try a lip squeak to stop it, you have 1 second to shoot!
14 it makes no difference what gun you shoot, just how you shoot.

there ya go, 200 magazine articals and 400 years of hunting in 1 minute!!!

Sundance pretty much said it, WORK the call don't just blow it(ya wimp :chuckle:) I personally do not think "what" the sound is matters as much as making it scream. :chuckle: I am no expert that is just stuff I have learned, there is a lot more too. A 'planned' approach to your stand is critical too.
keep notes.

Ahhh, I thought you were talking specific pitch/sound. I got you on the "putting some feeling" into it.  :salute:

I will admit I get a little wimpy and stay pretty "vanilla" with a rabbit call most of the time...

I got a camo Savage Edge combo with Bushnell 3-9x40 in .243 for about 300. Havent used it for coyotes yet but it would work great - I think they come in .223 also?

Personally I don't like a 17HMR for anything much larger than a sage rat.  A 22 Magnum will have more smack on a coyote than an HMR will.  My son kills a lot of coyotes and he shot one a couple years ago right in the forhead at 60 yards with a 17HMR.  Looked like a perfect headshot should.  Hear it go "smack", a tuft of fur flies off the head and dog dropped right there.  Only problem was....it woke back up in about a minute and took off while we were walking accross the draw to it!  I'm sure it had a headache, but that's NOT why we hike all the way out there to call them in.

I'm sure there have been some huge coyotes killed at some ridiculous ranges with one, but neither myself, nor my son will try one again on coyotes.  I know there are videos on Youtube where they kill wild hogs with them, but like I said, not for me.

Stevens (Savage) makes a good shooting 223 that you can find on special for around $200 every once in awhile.  Find an old used 3X9 Leupold scope, get some calls and get out there.  Good luck!
