.41 Magnum
« on: July 08, 2007, 07:55:09 AM »
Recently, I bought a .41 Magnum Ruger Blackhawk. It shoots very well with the 210 grain Federal Fusion ammo.

I was curious if anyone here has direct experience hunting deer with one of these revolvers?

I have never hunted with one, but I have a buddy that has. I loaded some ammo for him, but I can't remember what the load was, I can go back thru my records and find out if need be.
That's my one shot.

Idabooner has one and is his favorite pistola.  he has busted a ton of snakes with it, using homemade rounds.  I don't think he has killed any big game with it.  He carried it when he haule me around in the woods my first year or two in the internship of hunting.  His computer has died, bu when back up, I'll point him to this thread and he can give you some load info.

I haven't shot anything with mine, but have had it for a few years. I mostly shoot a 215 cast with 11 grs of HS-6. Book says it should run about 1100, but I have the 4 5/8s barrel. for deer I think just about any bullet will work fine.

I plan on using mine on my extra doe tag. At least at this point I believe I have that tag. I will probably switch to a jacketed bullet of some kind. I've read several times that a jacketed bullet will give quiker kills on deer because they will open up and do more damage, as penetration is not real neccesary.

I'm not a hand loader; Sportsman's Warehouse seems to carry a good cross section of factory ammo for it. Federal even loads a rather stout 240 grain hard cast bullet in their CastCore ammo for it; that would probably over penetrate your average deer.

Just for fun let me describe the snake load Boneaddict is talking about.  I start with a 32 special case, shave the head thinner w/ a Wilson trimmer & 22-250 holder so the cylinder will turn, cut and trim to the full length of the cylinder, using a pistol primer and a light load of shot-fire form the case.  That will put a shoulder on it.  Load 7 gr. unique, then form a  plastic cottage cheese carton I cut two discs, one to fit over the powder, fill the case to the top with #9 shot, then put in the smaller disc and crimp the edge of the brass over it to hold the shot in.  To reload a fired case, de-primmer w/ a 300 savage sizing die, resize in a 41 sizing die, neck size with a 38 special seat die, after loaded set the top disc and crimp with 38 SWC seating stem in a 41 seating die.  It's best to do this on a long winters day. Works great on snakes and around out buildings on varmints.

What loads would you use for a 265 LNGC Hard cast bullet in the 41 mag.

I'm up to 13.5g with 800x.
