Dog out hunted me!
« on: October 30, 2011, 07:17:32 PM »
So today I went out pheasant hunting and my shooting was horrific. Saw a lot of birds and got shots off at three of them. First thing this morning we were working our way through some trees and grass when my dog came back to me with a rooster. At first I thought it was a dead bird that somebody had lost the day before but when he got to me, he dropped it at my feet and it was still alive. It tried to run but the dog was on top of it again. This was the first time I've ever seen that happen. The weather was real cold and there was frost on the ground so I'm thinking that that helped him because the bird didn't want to move. When it warmed up other roosters were jumping like normal. If it wasn't for him, today I would have been skunked.

Just don't let him have the truck keys or you won't see him until after the season's over  :)

My last yellow lab did that twice. The first time I could see him chasing after something in the brush, I just thought it was a rabbit. Couple minutes later he brings back a rooster with a busted wing. Another time couple buddies and I were hunting and we stopped at the end of a draw after hunting it, we were standing there next to a big clump of grass. Next thing I know my lab jumps in there and brings out a rooster that had nothing wrong with it that we could tell. Ate both.

Yep I have had my dog do the same thing a time a two, I believe this is more prevelant with the released birds. Dont think it would happen as often with wild birds, not to say that it couldnt...hope you gave him an extra treat for doing that it saves on shot shells.. :chuckle:

I was quite surprised when my dog did that this year.  He's done it twice...One rooster and one hen :yike: ...both wild birds.

So far it has happened with wild birds much more than released birds.  Crippled released birds just do not last long enough in the eco-system!!

Survey results are biased since I have hunted wild birds more than released.

Brother......If I had listened to my viszla more I would have more birds in the docket!  I am constantly out hunted by my dog!  As well...... on my trip yesterday, I missed two shots at chuckars and he just went over to a bush and laid down till he was ready to get up.

Cheers....
