I haven't been down there for a few years. My son drew a cow tag in there about 4 years ago. I remember them giving us a gate key to get through the gate up at the top right off the hwy. Then you can drive to the bottom and there will be another gate there. You can't drive in past that gate. I scouted a good little bit before our hunt and found most of the elk are to the left of that gate. If you walk in past that gate at the bottom and there is a dirt road that goes right or left, we stayed left and walked in there for a ways. I was seeing elk all in that area when I was scouting and they were still there when we went to hunt. The first group we seen right before shooting light was a group of about 6 or 7 bulls. My son had a cow only tag. We got to where we were just below the observation look out above us. I think that is the Johnson ridge look out or something like that. But we got in on a little group about 10 cow and a few calves. And my son took one of those cows. After that we got up on one of the big mounds or dirty down there, they are all over if you know what I mean. And we could see a big heard further down I would say over 100 at least. After some pic's and gutting we packed it back to that dirt road we walked in on and then we walked back to our truck. I don't know if it is still the same, but after 12:00pm..Noon if you killed something in the morning you could drive in to get your elk out. You can't drive in unless you are just getting an animal out. And you can't drive in at all till after noon, so you aren't messing with anyone elses morning hunt. It was my son’s first elk hunt and a great one for him. I hope you have a great time and whack one. If you have any question feel free to pm me and I can see if I can answer.
