Neah Bay
« on: August 06, 2008, 08:26:12 AM »
Just wanted to share. We headed up to Neah Bay on July 25. We stayed at Snow Creek. Went out on Saturday and caught a few fish. The Fishing wasn't hot and heavy but a good time. We caught some Lings, a couple of salmon and even a limit of halibut. I have to say that I have heard a lot about seals taking salmon off of lines but never seen it, until this trip. So to cut this short, we saw the seal swimming around the fish. we turned the boat to try and catch up with it but the seal won. Sunday fishing sucked..........at least for us.

bummer on losing the fish to a seal...

here is my method for trying to beat the little *censored*s and catch my fish.
Once i realize that i am "sealed" up.  I get all the gear out of the water and try to force the seal to stay down by keeping the boat on top of it.
Usually the seal will surface 1 or 2 times before you can get him tired enough to stay right on top when he has to surface.  if they are worn out enough they will let go of the fish to breath and then try to chase it down again.
You dont have to excert a lot of pressure on your line, but keep tension and make sure you stay on top of the fish/seal.  They will tire out running from the boat, not fighting the line.
the last one I recovered i was able to net with the seal just a couple feet away after it had surfaced 3 times.

That first ling is a really nice fish.

I usually take 3 trips out there a year and havne't done one yet.  Makes me jelous seeing the pictures.  I'll take the ling over halibut any day.  However, I'll take the halibut cheeks over anything...  Swiftsure?

Nice looking fish.
Handle every stressful situation like a dog. If you can't eat it or destroy it, piss on it and walk away!
