Personally I don't like a 17HMR for anything much larger than a sage rat. A 22 Magnum will have more smack on a coyote than an HMR will. My son kills a lot of coyotes and he shot one a couple years ago right in the forhead at 60 yards with a 17HMR. Looked like a perfect headshot should. Hear it go "smack", a tuft of fur flies off the head and dog dropped right there. Only problem was....it woke back up in about a minute and took off while we were walking accross the draw to it! I'm sure it had a headache, but that's NOT why we hike all the way out there to call them in. I'm sure there have been some huge coyotes killed at some ridiculous ranges with one, but neither myself, nor my son will try one again on coyotes. I know there are videos on Youtube where they kill wild hogs with them, but like I said, not for me.Stevens (Savage) makes a good shooting 223 that you can find on special for around $200 every once in awhile. Find an old used 3X9 Leupold scope, get some calls and get out there. Good luck!
