Post up your lost posts!!!
« on: November 17, 2011, 05:01:03 PM »
I was going to show my 12 yr old daughter the post and pictures of the young girl who shot her first elk. It was a bull. My daughter is a little scard of shooting an elk, so I thought it would be good for her to see the post. The server went down and it's gone. My daughter has been hunting for 5 years and has 2 does and one buck buck. Pleasc post your pictures and story. Thanks

Here is a pic with my son and his first elk.  Cow out of the mudflow youth hunt a few years back, I think he was 11.  Do you have everything set up and ready for your daughters cow tag hunt?

I've killed elk and can deal with them. She is a little afraid because there big. I told her that they are just a big deer. If you know girls they get a little scared. :chuckle:

Pa Ben,
I would be happy to re-post the pics etc of my daughters bull.  Will try to get it posted as a reply here later tonight.  I love to see the kids out there.... That's what it's all about.  If the post will encourage your daughter or any others in any way it will be a privilege.

PA  BEN,
Here's the re-post you requested.
After a number of years of close calls on elk my daughter finally got her first bull.  A 5x5 roosevelt from SW WA.  Boy was she one happy hunter and I was even happier and very proud of her.  She was using her trusty Remington Model 7 in 7MM-08 with 140 grain Nosler Accubond bullets.

Here’s a quick summary of the hunt.  We spent the first couple hours after daylight hiking and covering some ground to see what we could see out on the edges.  About 9AM we were about ready to shift from what I call the spot and shoot phase of the day to the actual hunting phase of the day when we saw a few cows on the edge of the timber line.  We quickly kneeled down and put the binoculars to work.  We spotted a spike and then saw the legal branch bull step out of the timber.  They just popped out for a second and turned and dropped back into the timber.  So, I looked at my daughter, and she knew what I was going to say....."you ready to start hunting?"  With no hesitation she said lets go.  We dropped off the ridge and worked our way into the timber a few hundred yards below where they entered.  We suspected they were moving up hill so the hunt began.  We worked very slowly across the creek and onto a finger ridge and started sneaking our way through the thick timber up the ridge.  After about an hour we spotted the spike bedded down and we played peek-a-boo around a tree with him for almost 20 minutes.  We had to be patient as we didn’t want to spook him because we figured the rest of the herd would be very close.  He finally got up and fed out of sight so we gave him a few minutes and then slowly followed.  We angled up the ridge a bit to try and gain some advantage in terms of visibility in the thick timber.  We had gone about 100 yards when I spotted the form of another elk bedded at about 75 yards.  We both recognized it was the branch bull but he saw enough of us to get up and move off but he wasn’t really spooked as I’m not sure he really got a good look.  We gave him a few minutes and then crawled on our hands and knees about 50 yards working our way to a fallen tree lying along the top of the finger ridge in the timber.  When we peeked over the tree the small herd of about 10 animals was finally in sight and only about 100 yards away.  The problem was that the timber was so thick that we could only see parts of each elk.  We would get quick glimpses of the bull but could not get solid confirmation and a clear shooting lane.  The cows finally got nervous and began filing down the ridge.  Things started heating up then.  We ducked behind the tree and dove to the side and were both lying side by side.  We identified the cows and knew the bull was trailing but at this point had lost track of the spike.  I told my daughter that we had to be 100% sure of which elk was which before the safety came off.  About that time they stopped.  The elk in the back that we thought was the bull was behind some trees.  I didn’t have a good look so asked my daughter and she said it’s the bull.  I told her you have to confirm it’s the branch bull and she replied “confirmed”.  I said if it’s clear you can take the shot.  About that time the 7MM-08 went off.  The rest of the elk busted but he didn’t move so I knew he was hit.  She chambered another round just as he started to side hill.  Before she could shoot again the bull went down.  Boy did that start one heck of a celebration down in that timbered hole.  We were hugging, smiling, laughing and I’m not sure what else but she finally got her bull.  I couldn’t have asked for a better scenario.  She had the experience of actually hunting the bull on his turf and she did it.  It will be a day neither of us will ever forget.

It sounds like your daughter has already proven herself as a hunter with her success on deer so I would say to her…go get yourself an elk young lady…you can do it.

So enough of the story…..here’s the pictures you were looking for.  Enjoy

Great job getting your son on an elk but where is the muzzle of that rifle pointing in this pic?  Looks like it's right at your son...
